FIREFLY turns green, morphs into SERENITY

It's like what happened to BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, except in reverse: Variety reports that Universal Pictures has given the greenlight to the big screen FIREFLY movie, now officially titled SERENITY. The film's budget is being reported at around "mid-eight figures", so let's call it more or less $50 million dollars.

Series creator Joss Whedon will direct the movie from his script, set approximately six months after the events seen in the last FIREFLY episode. Filming is now set to commence in June for an anticipated June 2005 release. Deals have already been ironed out for the majority of FIREFLY's cast to reprise their roles in the movie, including Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds), Gina Torres (Zoe), Jewel Staite (Kaylee), Adam Baldwin (Jayne), Sean Mahar (Simon) and Summer Glau (River). Not mentioned in Variety's article were cast members Alan Tudyk (Wash) or Ron Glass (Book).

GALACTICA actor claims series is a go

Reports are starting to spread via the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA online community that Sci Fi has given an official greenlight to the proposed GALACTICA TV series late yesterday afternoon. The message forum of Galactica 2003.net has a thread where GALACTICA actor Aaron Douglas has stated that the network has ordered 13 episodes of the new series. Douglas played Chief Petty Officer Tyrol in the mini-series, and according to his post, his contract calls for his character to appear in all 13 episodes.

"Yes it is true," writes Douglas in his posting on the website. "They have ordered 13 episodes and it truly went down to the wire."

According to Douglas he only learned of the go-ahead late in the afternoon of January 30 with literally minutes left until the options holding the actors in place ran out.

Douglas also added that he heard from actress Grace Park, who played Boomer in the mini-series, also stating that her option had been exercised and the series was happening.

No official word from Sci Fi Channel about a greenlight of the new GALACTICA TV series has been heard as of yet, but if the messages are indeed true, it will likely be announced after the weekend is over. There has been no comment from series creator/showrunner Ronald D. Moore about this latest development, but if Sci Fi just gave a go-ahead Friday evening, maybe he's out celebrating.

We'll keep you appraised when more news develops.

STAR WARS - the television series?

Sources for The Force.net have told the website about a tantalizing rumor: there might be a proposal for a post-EPISODE III STAR WARS TV show on someone's desk. The Force.net hears speculation that the premise of the show follows the infamous and terrifying rise to power of Sith Lord Darth Vader between the purge of the Jedi Knights and the start of A NEW HOPE. Whether this alleged TV show would be live-action or animation (as Cartoon Network's CLONE WARS series is) remains unclear.

SciFi Channel Asks For Six-Episode GALACTICA

While fans of the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA "re-imagining" wait for official word to find out whether or not The Sci Fi Channel has decided to take the show to series, we've heard from one of our trustworthy sources on the matter. According to this Vancouver-based source, the Channel has given the producers of the new GALACTICA a six-episode commitment. It just hasn't been officially announced yet.

Debuting to strong ratings, last month's broadcast of the two-part, four-hour BATTLESTAR GALACTICA mini-series earned the Sci Fi Channel its third highest ratings ever for a program. The second night of GALACTICA grabbed a larger share of the audience than the first night. Usually this kind of good news would be enough to launch the program into a full-fledged series but the show's high cost per episode (which is ironically the same kind of issue that led to the original GALACTICA's swift cancellation after just one season) is contributing to cold feet by Channel suits. But as our source tells us -- and we know who they are and their previous established track history is solid -- the Channel has ordered a half-dozen hour-long episodes. It's expected that all of the primary cast members from the mini-series will re-appear in the series version of GALACTICA.

Matt Wagner's GRENDEL gets optioned

Dark Horse Comics President Mike Richardson hinted about it to us during an exclusive interview last November, and now it's front page news in The Hollywood Reporter today: Matt Wagner's GRENDEL is in development as a live-action film.

First published by Comico in the 80s and now residing at Dark Horse, Wagner's story is about different incarnations of a masked hero throughout different time periods. The first GRENDEL arc was about Hunter Rose, a young man who wore the black and white Grendel costume. Rose's successor was Christine Spar, Rose's adopted granddaughter. Spar will be the Grendel character used for the movie, seen in the "The Devil Inside" story arc. The GRENDEL comic series has also shown us the far future versions of the character.

John Wells Productions is developing the film in association with Dark Horse Entertainment and Arsenal Entertainment. The movie's screenplay is being penned by Carl Lund.

ALIENS Egg Added to Smithsonian Collection

The next time you're visiting the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, don't pull a Kane and look into the alien egg.

The Smithsonian Institute has added an egg from James Cameron's ALIENS to its collection of movie memorabilia, as well as a copy of the film's screenplay and a movie poster. The egg was presented in a special ceremony by the movie's star, Sigourney Weaver, who shot to fame by playing Ripley in the series of ALIEN films.

The ALIENS egg stands three feet tall and is two feet in diameter. Built using Plaster of Paris and coated with a heavy stabilizing glaze, the egg was one of many constructed for the film during the scene showing Ripley discovering the Alien Queen.

Lady Penelope`s pretty cool THUNDERBIRDS wheels

Back when we first scooped about Ford Motor Company's involvement with Lady Penelope's pink set of wheels from the THUNDERBIRDS movie, our informant showed us an early concept design sketch of the car. As the days tick by until the THUNDERBIRDS trailer starts to appear in theaters, Ford has released three photos of Penelope's six-wheeled limousine, two of which are brand new to our eyes.

Click on any of the three photos to see Penny's 27-foot FAB 1 in detail. The car was designed in tandem by Ford Design Europe and led by the movie's production designer, John Beard. "We had a concept that updated the original, 1960's-designed pink, six wheeled, glass topped limousine for the 21st century," explains Beard. "Fords designers, who coincidently were also re-inventing design classics for the future, came on board and successfully perfected the concept and gave it the Thunderbird identity."

Furthermore, THUNDERBIRDS director Jonathan Frakes comments "We had a concept that updated the original, 1960's-designed pink, six wheeled, glass topped limousine for the 21st century. Fords designers, who coincidently were also re-inventing design classics for the future, came on board and successfully perfected the concept and gave it the Thunderbird identity."

THUNDERBIRDS blasts into theaters next summer. Check out the trailer here.

The return of BABYLON 5?

Dark Horizons reports reports (via Usenet) that there is something new and significant happening with the BABYLON 5 franchise, and this time it comes straight from the fingers of the show's creator, J. Michael Straczynski. Is it for movie or television format? JMS isn't saying at this time...

"There has been something of rather substantial proportion that's finally gone from talk to money, such that I'm now working frantically to meet some deadlines, but there's nothing I can say about this until after January 15th, probably closer to the end of that month," explains the writer. "The only thing I can say is that phase one of the new project is a go, hence the furious writing schedule at this end of things, which is why I've been silent until deciding to kick up some dust on the political discusion. I've been writing my little brains out. I wouldn't go on about something in this way if it wasn't a significant development."

There is the B5 project that actor Jerry Doyle was hoping to jumpstart with or without Straczynski's involvement, though this may be something else new under the sun. One thing that is confirmed now is a new BABYLON 5 DVD that collects all the two-hour telefilms together in one box set (including commentary by JMS on "In the Beginning" and "The Gathering") as well as a box set for the short-lived B5 spinoff series CRUSADE. Expect both of those new sets to be released sometime in 2004 after the fifth and final season of BABYLON 5 hit the street.

Who is BATMAN's new butler?

According to both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety Oscar-winner Michael Caine is the man who will be Bruce Wayne's manservant in the new BATMAN movie. Caine, 70, would inherit the role from actor Michael Gough who has played the character throughout all four movies starting with 1989's BATMAN.

Asked to comment on the rumor, a representative for Warner Bros. declined to address the matter with the trade magazines. BATMAN director Christopher Nolan (INSOMNIA) continues to work on prepping the film for an early '04 start date. Caine is also expected to reprise his role as beauty fashion consultant Victor Melling in the sequel to MISS CONGENIALITY

SEAQUEST DSV actor dies at 27

In the past 24 hours Cinescape has received unconfirmed reports that actor Jonathan Brandis, perhaps best known for his role as child prodigy Lucas Wolenczek on the NBC series SEAQUEST DSV, had died. Unfortunately, that story has now been confirmed.

A recent posting on the official website for THE YEAR THAT TREMBLED, a feature that Brandis starred in, confirms that the young actor has passed on. "We at Novel City Pictures are deeply saddened and stunned by this, and like many people, we grieve for his loss," reads the statement. "Jonathan was a great actor, and our friend. We send our deepest sympathies to his family, his friends, and his fans. We all miss him very much."

According to a news report, Brandis' body was found in his Los Angeles apartment yesterday. The cause of death at this time remains unknown with no signs of violence or foul play on his body. The results of an autopsy should be made available shortly.

Brandis also starred in HART'S WAR, RIDE WITH THE DEVIL, SIDEKICKS and was the lead in THE NEVERENDING STORY II.

Frasier's Brother to be HELLBOY's Best Bud

Yesterday HELLBOY helmer Guillermo del Toro posted the news on the official movie's message forums that FRASIER co-star David Hyde-Pierce would be providing the voice talent for Abe Sapien in the movie.

Hellboy Poster

The role of Abe, the merman/best pal of Hellboy and longtime member of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, is being played by Doug Jones. Hyde-Pierce has provided his voice to another character, that of Drix in the animated film OSMOSIS JONES.

In other HELLBOY news, the new teaser poster for the film featuring, well, Hellboy himself (played by Ron Perlman.) This atmospheric picture will be the general movie audience's first impression of HELLBOY when they spot the poster on display in theater lobbies shortly. Make plans for next April 2 to be in front of a screen.

As always, click on the poster image above to see a larger presentation of the goods.

DOCTOR WHO producer speaks

According to a report published on the Gallifrey One website, the producer of the new DOCTOR WHO TV series, Russell Davies, gave anxious fans more news about the forthcoming show in development at the BBC. Davies told an audience at a literary festival that contrary to any published reports no actor has been cast to play the Doctor.

So far at this stage of development the series is shaping up to be thirteen 45-minute episodes, with the majority being stand-alone stories and two three-part episodes. No information was mentioned as to what kind of stories the episodes except that they might have a feel similar to the episodes of another British sci-fi series that appeared in the late 70s-early 80s, SAPPPHIRE & STEEL. Unfortunately there's still been nothing about whether we'll get to see the return of bad guys like the Daleks or Cybermen in the new WHO. The next sit-down production meeting for the show's creators is scheduled for December 8.

Davies also commented that he and the BBC both hope these thirteen episodes of the 21st century DOCTOR WHO will prove to be popular and thus ensure that the series will "run and run".

DOCTOR WHO is scheduled to return to the airwaves sometime in 2005.

When and where you can see HELLBOY Trailer

While it may be MATRIX Wednesday for the majority of movie fans, today was a good day for the crew paying attention to the official message forum for HELLBOY. Director Guillermo del Toro stuck his head in and answered a couple of dozen questions that the fans have been asking him. Among the answers: precisely when we'll see the trailer for HELLBOY.

According to del Toro, the HELLBOY trailer has been confirmed to run with THE MISSING (opening wide November 26) and Warner Bros. THE LAST SAMURAI (opening December 5). The teaser poster for HELLBOY debuts in theater lobbies starting this weekend.

And get ready for a cameo by the director and HELLBOY's creator in the film. "We appear together briefly dressed as a knight and a dragon (fat dragon) in a Halloween pumpkin patch costume party," revealed del Toro.

There's loads more including what new movies del Toro has seen, what some of his favorite comic books are, what he thinks will be the best movie of the year and which HELLBOY cast member has a role in AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. Read the Hell-thread.

Gaze into THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW

Apple has done it again and has a new trailer for a major movie release, this time for Roland Emmerich's end of the world epic THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. The film started production more than a year ago but still, there's been no images released showing us what to expect from this tale of a global superstorm that ravages Earth and threatens to wipe out humanity.

The new trailer makes up for all of that. Find out how the CGI gods at Digital Domain have been busy spending the film's budget of $125 million dollars creating some pretty damn neat special effects. Download the trailer for THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW and you will believe that an F7 tornado can tear up a city.

Starring Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhall, Sela Ward and Emmy Rossum, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW opens in theaters on May 28, 2004.

Another Asimov tale to become a movie?

With his latest project, THE SINGING DETECTIVE, now in limited release, director Keith Gordon has been hired to write the screenplay and direct the movie adaptation of Isaac Asimov's THE END OF ETERNITY sci-fi novel. The project is set up at Paramount Pictures, with Cruise/Wagner Productions developing the project.

Asimov's story is about an individual in a future society that falls in love with a woman from the modern day. The problem is that the woman will be eliminated from all of history as a result of a forthcoming change in the timeline, and he wants to ensure that she survives -- even if it means at the cost of everything.

It`s the wife of the husband of SON OF THE MASK!

Actress Traylor Howard has been cast as Jamie Kennedy's wife in SON OF THE MASK. Howard, who starred opposite Alred Molina in the short-lived TV series BRAM & ALICE last season, will play the mother of the infant that accidentally puts on the cursed mask of Loki, turning the baby into a force of supernature. Kennedy will play the new Dad trying to get his infant son back to normal. Larry Guterman (CATS & DOGS) will direct the film for New Line Cinema.

Orlando bound for HEAVEN

As was rumored just one week ago, actor Orlando Bloom has now been confirmed to have signed a contract to star in Ridley Scott's next picture, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. The LORD OF THE RINGS co-star will play a 12th century blacksmith who is transformed into a knight to defend Jerusalem from approaching conquerors. Shooting will begin January 12 in Morocco. The script was written by William Monahan (who's also written JURASSIC PARK IV).

A new PHANTOM Film

There may be another PHANTOM movie coming soon. Film producing companies Crusader Entertainment and Hyde Park are teaming up with screenwriter Mel Stewart to work on a new film version of THE PHANTOM, based on the superhero of the same name. The last appearance of the purple-clad crimefighter was in the 1996 movie of the same name which starred Billy Zane, Treat Williams and an up-and-coming Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Stewart, a former Olympic gold medal swimmer-turned-screenwriter, wants to set the action in the new PHANTOM movie in the modern day (the '96 movie was set in the '30s.) That's easy enough to do since "The Ghost Who Walks", as The Phantom is known to his enemies, is really a succession of sons who inherit the guise and legendary reputation of the hero, all the better to strike fear into his opponents.

Heroine found to face ALIEN VS. PREDATOR

Actress Sanaa Lathan (who can be seen playing opposite Denzel Washington in OUT OF TIME) has landed the role of Lex Kline in ALIEN VS. PREDATOR, Paul W.S. Anderson's meeting of the 20th Century Fox extraterrestrials. Lathan's character is the lead in the film, kind of like Sigourney Weaver's Ripley in the stand-alone ALIEN films. Whereas Ripley was a Warrant Officer on an interstellar commercial ore refinery that was at the wrong place and wrong time, Lathan's Kline is a professional explorer hired by billionaire Charles Wayland to investigate the strange pyramid discovered beneath the surface of Antartica. What it boils down to is: it's still the wrong place and the wrong time to be there.

Lathan joins the previously announced Lance Henriksen (Charles Wayland) and the newly revealed cast members Ewen Bremmer and Raoul Bova. Shooting commences on October 28 in Prague.

SCOOP: Who`s working on BLADE III F/X?

Thanks to a good friend, we've been tipped off that special effects guru Mike Elizalde and his Spectral Motion shop are creating effects for New Line's upcoming BLADE: TRINITY, currently being directed by David Goyer.

Elizalde's Spectral Motion team specializes in creating conventional animatronic effects for movies. Spectral Motion worked on BLADE II under the supervision of Steve Johnson, and they also did the majority of animatronic effects that you will see in Guillermo del Toro's upcoming HELLBOY movie out next spring.

From Hobbits to HOOLIGANS

He's moving from hobbits to hooligans. LORD OF THE RINGS star Elijah Wood will star in the upcoming independent film HOOLIGANS for Odd Lot Entertainment. Wood plays a student who gets kicked out of prestigious Harvard undergrad who gets undeservedly kicked out of school. He decided to move to London where he meets up with a British fella who introduces him to the harsh, violent sub-culture of soccer hooliganism: getting into fights with the fans of the other team, inciting a riot, the usual stuff.

Charlie Hunnam (he'll be seen in the upcoming COLD MOUNTAIN with Jude Law and Nicole Kidman) will play Pete, Elijah's hooligan buddy. Filming starts in April 2004.

X-Man Famke Janssen plays HIDE & SEEK

Coming off of her performance in X-MEN 2 earlier this year, actress Famke Janssen has taken a role in the thriller HIDE & SEEK. Janssen joins Robert De Nero and Dakota Fanning in the Fox movie, now filming in New York City.

Few details are known about Janssen's part or the premise of the film. The only release information about the movie's story is that it's about a young girl who loses her Mother and deals with her pain in a terrifying manner. De Niro plays the young girl's father.

John Polson (SWIMFAN is directing the picture from a screenplay by Ari Schlossberg.

This is not your father's KING ARTHUR movie

See more pics

Empire Movies has done a nice job of landing the first images from the upcoming KING ARTHUR movie, now in production and being directed by Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY). The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced movie stars Clive Owen as the legendary King Arthur, Keira Knightly as Guinevere, Stephen Dillane as Merlin, Ioan Guffudd as Lancelot and a lot of other great British and European actors. The movie is due out by the Christmas of 2004.

The anonymous Empire scooper furnished a couple of dozen images showing Arthur in his Roman Empire-esque armor and the Knights of the Round Table, as well as some shots of director Fuqua calling the shots behind-the-scenes. Take a look at some of these images below and then definitely check out the remainder of these amazing shots at the Empire Movies website.

Superhero Hype gets New CATWOMAN Pics

Cavill back at the top for SUPERMAN contenders?

Sources for the Superman V.com website are saying that the prime candidate for the new Man of Steel is once again young British actor Henry Cavill. This site first mentioned Caville as a candidate last March, and Superman V.com's sources also heard the same rumor and reported on it last August.

According to the latest Superman V.com report, Cavill is now director's McG as well as producer Jon Peters first choice for the part of Superman. Even so the website knows just how tenuous these kind of reports can be, and how fast things can change. "Don't take this as gospel until WB issue a press release saying he has the role," adds the site's reporter.

We'll keep our own ears open and see what our sources have to say.

Gore set sails again with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2

Fresh from his highest-grossing film to date, director Gore Verbinski has signed a deal that will see him helm PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2 for Walt Disney Pictures. It appears as if all the major players save for villain Geoffrey Rush are returning for the second sailing including stars Johnny Depp, Kiera Knightly, Orlando Bloom and producer Jerry "Everything I touch turns to gold" Bruckheimer.

But when will PIRATES 2 start filming? That's a good question. Right now everyone is waiting for the script to be delivered, from the same writing team that penned the first adventure (namely, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott.)

Is the original STAR WARS about to come to DVD?

For the past month now the rumors have been flying hard and fast that an announcement concerning the release of the first trilogy of STAR WARS movies on DVD may be in the cards. Websites such as The Digital Bits have been reporting that there are rumblings Lucasfilm may (remember, that's a maybe) release EPISODES IV - VI on DVD sometime in the fourth quarter of 2004.

And now the day of the big announcement may have been revealed. According to a report published on the STAR WARS collectible website Yakface.com, an important event of some kind is being held on November 5 at The Precidio, the complex in San Francisco now owned by Lucasfilm. An exotic invititation in the form of a Darth Vader figure fixed atop a black acrylic block has been sent to businesses that have worked with Lucasfilm in the past.

The invite reads: "LORD VADER IS PLANNING A MAJOR ASSAULT. HE SUMMONS YOU TO SHARE HIS TOP SECRET BATTLE PLANS. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2003, THE OFFICERS' CLUB, AT THE PRESIDIO, SAN FRANCISCO, CA. LIGHTSABERS AND BLASTERS MUST BE CHECKED AT THE DOOR. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU."

Is this the invite to a presentation announcing the classic STAR WARS films on DVD? And if so, will the films be only the SPECIAL EDITION versions and not the original released cuts?

We're still waiting for a TIE Fighter to arrive and drop off our invite...

BUFFY's best friend goes to NBC

Actress Alyson Hannigan, known to genre fans for her role as Willow Rosenberg on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, has committed to star in a new half-hour NBC sitcom. Hannigan is listening to show ideas from writers and producers and the show is expected to be on the air by the fall of 2004. An NBC executive tells The Hollywood Reporter that getting the Hannigan project off-the-ground and on the air is a "top priority" for the network.

Hannigan has also enjoyed success on the big screen in three AMERICAN PIE films, but you already knew that, right?

Thompson officially teaching in HARRY POTTER 3

First mentioned earlier this week, the casting of Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson in HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN is now confirmed by Warner Bros. Thompson is playing the part of Sibyll Trelawney, Hogwart's eccentric Professor of Divination.

"I am very excited to work with Emma," director Alfonso Cuaron said about the addition of Thompson to the cast. "She brings such life and spirit to the characters she portrays, it will be exciting to see her as Trelawney."

Filming on PRISONER OF AZKABAN continues for a June 2004 release.

LOST IN SPACE on The WB

The new version of LOST IN SPACE has found itself a home on The WB. The froggy network won the right to broadcast the updated version of Irwin Allen's sci-fi family adventure by ponying up more than $2 million bucks. The pilot was written by former BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER writer Doug Petrie and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 helmer John Woo's production company, Lion Rock Productions, is also involved. Woo will likely direct the pilot episode.

The new LOST IN SPACE will stand on its own and not be a direct connection to the 1997 New Line Cinema movie or the 60s TV show. While the show will still be about a futuristic family from the year 2097 that gets lost in remote outer space, there won't be a mischievious Dr. Smith character in the group (but there will be a family robot.) Any chance we'll see shiny silver jumpsuits.

Is it EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH?

Has Lucasfilm registered the domain listing REVENGE OF THE SITH in preparation for using it as the sub-title of STAR WARS EPISODE III? According to a reader of TheForce.net, the company has, and it's done so anonymously.

A Force.net reader apparently got confirmation from a representative working at the domain registrar Register.com that RevengeOfTheSith.net is owned by Lucasfilm Ltd. but was purchased by Register.com for Lucasfilm. A search on the WHOIS registry does indeed list Register.com as the owner of the RevengeOfTheSith.net name. This has further ignited speculation that Lucasfilm is using REVENGE OF THE SITH as a working title for EPISODE III.

That's precisely what we reported last June. Our source, connected to the entertainment industry, told us that this title was the one people were using for EPISODE III related business.

Before you embrace SITH as the "it has to be" title of EPISODE III, remember that the first two STAR WARS prequels employed working titles that were later discarded in favor of the films final sub-titles. Also, Lucasfilm has a long history of registering dozens of domains for STAR WARS characters, planets and equipment/devices just so it can ensure others don't grab the domain and use it for non-STAR WARS content.

There's also another monkey wrench that's part of this story: a quick lookup of RevengeOfTheSith.com indicates that domain is registered to a Los Angeles company called The Force Productions and not Register.com. Who are they and how do they fit into all of this?

HITCHHIKER`S GUIDE finally sees green

After almost two decades of being trapped in development hell, Walt Disney Pictures has finally given a greenlight for the feature film adaptation of THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. Filming is scheduled to commence next year in England, with city scenes to be shot in London.

What appears to have finally worked in favor of the GUIDE movie was the introduction of music video director Garth Jennings and his producing partner Nick Goldsmith. Karey Kirkpatrick (CHICKEN RUN) wrote the latest draft of the GUIDE movie based on Douglas Adams classic sci-fi comedy novel.

And now the casting begins...
