Expedition 12 Commander: "It was a heck of a ride."
Update for 8:48 p.m. EDT Saturday April 8:

Recovery crews have removed the two-astronaut space station crew of Expedition 12 and Brazilian astronaut Marcos Pontes from their Soyuz spacecraft and all three men are in good health, NASA officials said.

NASA officials said Expedition 12 flight engineers Valery Tokarev, who sat in the center commande seat of the Soyuz TMA-7 spacecraft during the today's landing, exited the capsule first. He was seen smiling for pictures and answering questions while being tended by recovery workers.

Expedition 12 commander Bill McArthur also smiled after leaving the vehicle, a veteran now of four spaceflights.

"It was a heck of a ride," McArthur said of today's landing, comparing it to a Disney amusement park ride. "It was like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. You'd love it."

Pontes, Brazil's first astronaut, beamed as recovery crews worked to make him and his fellow Soyuz companions comfortable.

McArthur, Tokarev and Pontes made a pinpoint landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan in Central Asia, effectively ending their respective missions to the International Space Station (ISS). Touchdown occured on time at 7:48 p.m. EDT (2348 GMT).

Earlier, McArthur, Tokarev and Pontes left the space station earlier today at 4:28 p.m. EDT (2028 GMT), then fired their Soyuz spacecraft's engines just over two hours later to make the descent to Earth's surface.

Recovery crews reported watching the Soyuz capsule streak across the dark sky. It is early morning at the Expedition 12 crew's landing site.

"The Soyuz spacecraft has just passed directly overhead leaving a bright plasma trail as it passed just over a setting half Moon," NASA spokesperson Rob Navias said from the recovery crew's Arkalyk, Kazakhstan staging ground.

The Expedition 12 crew has completed a 190-day tour aboard the ISS and handed station control over to Expedition 13 commander Pavel Vinogradov and flight engineer Jeffrey Williams. Pontes, his nation's first astronaut, completed a 10-day orbital trek that included eight days aboard the ISS.

A wrap up story of today's Expedition 12 landing is available here.
