Recovery Crews Arrive at Expedition 9 Landing Site
Update for 9:00 p.m. EDT Saturday Oct. 23, 2004:

Helicopter crews, flight surgeons and other recovery personnel have arrived at the landing site of a Soyuz space capsule that returned two Russian cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut to Earth tonight.

The Soyuz TMA-4 space capsule carrying Expedition 9 commander Gennady Padalka, flight engineer Michael Fincke and visiting ISS cosmonaut Yuri Shargin landed on time at 8:36 p.m. EDT (0036 Oct. 24 GMT) after a successful stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The hatch has been opened.

While the landing was right on target, recovery crews did find the capsule on its side instead of upright. The configuration could be expected because of strong winds in the area.

The landing was the last stop in a three-hour spaceflight that ended a six-month spaceflight for Padalka and Fincke and the first 10 days in space for Shargin.

The Expedition 9 crew and Shargin undocked from the space station at 5:08 p.m. EDT (2108 GMT).

Helicopter recovery crews are near the landing site, located about 43 miles (70 kilometers) north of Arkalyk, Kazakhstan, and first saw the spacecraft's plasma trail streak across the early-morning sky during its descent, then observed the capsule float down under its parachute.

It is apparently quite cold near the landing area, though initially blustery weather conditions have eased somewhat, NASA officials said.

Shargin and the Expedition 9 crew began their Earthward journey at about 2:13 p.m. EDT (1813 GMT), when they closed the hatch connecting their spacecraft to the ISS.

With the hatch closed, control of the ISS was officially turned over to the the Expedition 10 commander Leroy Chiao and flight engineer Salizhan Sharipov, who docked with the station at Oct. 16, bringing Shargin to the ISS.

A wrap up of today's undocking and landing activities will be posted to SPACE.com's homepage.

NASA TV is providing live video of Expedition 9's departure from the space station, with separate broadcasts covering hatch closure, undocking and landing.
