A slow week for the tabloid press uncovered only a sighting of a strange creature in New England, more grim tidings of death from the skies and the discovery of a strange "Holy Land saucer" in Israel.
The Sun revealed that three teenagers in Dover, Mass., encountered a "peach-colored" creature with eyes like "orange marbles" and elongated digits and limbs. The tabloid dubbed the creature, which looked remarkably similar to the archetypal "gray alien" in an artist's sketch, "The Dover Demon."
In the same issue, dated August 31, the Vatican leaked a copy of the prophecies of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes to Sun reporter Pat Roller, revealing that a big chunk of space debris is indeed heading for the Earth.
According to Roller, Bernadette predicted a "meteor of enormous size will threaten the Earth as the new millennium dawns," and only "worldwide prayer and fasting" will save the planet.
Mike Foster from the Weekly World News broke the story of an apparent UFO buried in the desert near Jerusalem. Discovered by Israeli scientists last month, the object seems to be about 850 feet in diameter and is apparently made of metal.
Foster said the discovery caused a stir in the Israeli press, and that the government issued a "total news blackout on the matter" last week.
Meanwhile, the News quoted Moshe Abramson, a scientist involved in the project, as speculating that the object is likely a "vehicle of some type," which might have buried itself to remain hidden from humanity.
