Expedition 8 Lands Safely
Update for 8:20 p.m. EDT Thursday, April 29:

Three astronauts have their feet firmly on the Earth after their Soyuz spacecraft landed safely in the steppes of Kazakhstan today.

The two-person crew of the International Space Station (ISS) Expedition 8 and a Dutch astronaut landed safe, sound and right on target after a six-hour descent from the space station. Recovery crews spotted the space capsule as its parachutes slowed its Earthward fall and the first support helicopters had arrived at the landing site. Russian mission controllers confirmed that the spacecraft fired its retro rockets just before landing.

Expedition 8's touchdown occurred on time at 8:12 p.m. EDT (0012 GMT), or early Friday morning at the Kazakhstan landing site.

The entire descent from the ISS to Earth went off without a hitch, successfully returning Expedition 8 crewmembers Michael Foale and Alexander Kaleri, as well as visiting astronaut Andre Kuipers of the Netherlands, back into gravity's arms. Their Soyuz TMA-3 spacecraft landed almost exactly where mission planners expected, southwest of the Kazahk capital city of Astana.

The Soyuz crew is currently being helped out of their spacecraft by recovery workers and undergoing initial medical checks.

The flawless landing was the end of a smooth return to Earth. Under the command of Kaleri, the Soyuz vehicle left the ISS at 4:52 p.m. EDT (2052 GMT), backing away slowly as both space vehicles passed over northeastern China. The return voyage began when Kaleri, Foale and Kuipers began their return to Earth when they closed the hatch to their Soyuz spacecraft at 1:47 p.m. EDT (1747 GMT) today.

Back on the space station, two new astronauts are in charge. Expedition 9 commander and cosmonaut Gennady Padalka and NASA ISS science officer Michael Fincke arrived at the station on April 21 with Kuipers. The Expedition 8 crew formally handed over station control to Padalka and Fincke just before closing the hatch of their spacecraft.

A wrap up story on Expedition 8's landing will be posted to SPACE.com's homepage shortly.
