Space Image of the Day Gallery (April 2014)

Opposite World

Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope/Coelum

Wednesday, April 30, 2014: The patterns of winding in the spiral arms of two large galaxies show they spin in opposite directions. A screen of stars belonging to our own galaxy, the Milky Way, lies in the space closer to us. A spheroidal dwarf appears near the pair, while further in the distance, many galaxies decorate the background of this image.
