When New Line pursued remake rights to the 1956 sci-fi classic
Now that New Line has the rights to remake Forbidden Planet, the movie studio needs to get a creative team together that can plumb the secrets of the Krell as soon as possible.

Frank Darabont, best known for helming Stephen King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, is in talks to both write and direct the Planet remake, according to entertainment daily Variety.

Darabont's primary contribution to the science fiction genre so far has been a subtractive one. He was originally slated to do a rewrite of George Lucas' original screenplay for The Phantom Menace, but reportedly turned the job down, saying "there was nothing to be done. It's perfect."

Even if Darabont is in talks with the studio, no confirmation of his involvement is likely to emerge for some time.

New Line has not yet set a timetable for the new Planet's release beyond "the fast track."

Before the studio won the rights to the classic film, Darabont was mentioned along with action-SF legend James Cameron as the likeliest candidates to direct the remake. Cameron, however, is almost certain to be too busy.
