Soyuz Landing was 'Quite a Ride,' Chiao Says
Update for 7:45 p.m. EDT Sunday, April 24:

NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao, commander of the tenth mission to the International Space Station (ISS), said today's landing of his Soyuz spacecraft was "quite a ride."

"It was very different from the space shuttle," said Chiao, who has flown aboard three shuttle missions.

Chiao, Expedition 10 flight engineer Salizhan Sharipov and Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori landed on time at 6:08 p.m. EDT (2208 GMT). Their spacecraft reportedly landed on its side about 20 meters from a river.

Two helicopters carried the Soyuz crew from their landing site to Arkalyk - a 20-minute flight - touching down at where a medical tent has been erected for their exams at about 7:15 p.m. EDT (2315 GMT). Chiao was the first one out of the helicopter, smiling and waving.

The crew was reportedly in good health, NASA officals said, adding that the Soyuz spacecraft streaked directly overhead of Arkalyk during landing.

"It was an absolutely beautiful site," said NASA spokesman Rob Navias from the Arkalyk airstrip, adding that the spacecraft appeared like an orange-colored comet. "We saw the Soyuz in a clear sky and starry night, with a full moon."

The space station's Expedition 11 crew was also able to see the fiery reentry of the Soyuz spacecraft.

The three Soyuz astronauts landed in central Kazakhstan about 53 miles (85 kilometers) north Arkalyk. While it was early evening in the U.S. during the landing, it was 4:08 a.m. early April 25 in Kazakhstan at time of landing.

The Soyuz crew undocked from the ISS at 2:44:40 p.m. EDT (1844:40 GMT) as the station passed over Central Asia. They fired their spacecraft's engine for a deorbit maneuver at 5:17 p.m. EDT (2117 GMT).

Chiao and Sharipov lived in space for 193 days during their Expedition 10 mission, conducting two ISS spacewalks, science experiments and station maintenance during the increment. Vittori, however, is concluding a 10-day spaceflight after launching to the ISS with Expedition 11 crew - commander Sergei Krikalev and flight engineer John Phillips - on April 16.

A wrap up of today's landing activities will be posted to SPACE.com's homepage shortly.
