Channels or Canals?
Giovanni Schiaparelli, based on his detailed observations of Mars with an 8.75-inch (0.2 meter) telescope, drew this map of the Red Planet in 1888. The esteemed astronomer called these crisscrossing dark lines "canali" -- Italian for "channels." But some misunderstood his terminology when it was translated into English as the word "canals" and believed them to be artificial features built by a race of thirsty Martians to transport water.
