Titan Unveiled
The successful landing of the European probe Huygens on the surface of Titan has given astronomers their first look beneath the Saturnian moon's hazy atmosphere. This picture is a composite of 30 images from Huygens probe's Descent images/Spectral Radiometer (DISR). They were taken from an altitude varying from eight miles (13 kilometers) down to five miles (eight kilometers) when the probe was descending towards its landing site. Huygens landed on Titan on Jan. 14, 2005 at about 7:45 a.m. EST (12:45 GMT) as seen from Earth, though it took signals just over an hour to reach Earth from the probe's mothership - NASA's Saturn orbiter Cassini.
