                                                            <title><![CDATA[ See gorgeous views of the Aug. 12 total solar eclipse captured from space ]]></title>
                                                                                                <dc:content><![CDATA[ <p>The Aug. 12 total solar eclipse didn't only plunge millions of people across Greenland, Iceland and Spain into a false twilight — a fleet of spacecraft orbiting our planet managed to capture the magic, too. </p><p><a href="https://www.space.com/total-solar-eclipse-2026-a-complete-guide"><u>August's total solar eclipse</u></a> occurred as <a href="https://www.space.com/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html"><u>the moon</u></a> passed directly between the sun and <a href="https://www.space.com/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html"><u>Earth</u></a> during its monthly <a href="https://www.space.com/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html"><u>new moon</u></a> phase. Those lucky enough to be in the path of totality watched on in awe as the moon progressively swallowed the light of the sun, ultimately revealing our star's tenuous atmosphere against a prematurely darkened evening sky.</p><p>It was a show of truly epic proportions — and maybe one whose scale can be particularly appreciated when viewed through the mechanical eyes of <a href="https://www.space.com/38700-nasa-history.html"><u>NASA</u></a> and <a href="https://www.space.com/22562-european-space-agency.html"><u>European Space Agency (ESA)</u></a> spacecraft that observe our planet and sun from afar. The "Occulter" spacecraft, closest to the sun, is equipped with a large sunshield, or <a href="https://www.space.com/what-is-a-coronagraph.html"><u>coronagraph</u></a>. Tons of satellites and probes do too, and that includes the ISS. This created a truly remarkable moment for some skywatchers. "It feels like it really shouldn't be happening. Witnessing the crown-like shape of the corona stretching away from the dark shadow of the moon is one of the most breathtaking moments of an eclipse. When this alignment happens, the moon casts its shadow along a line known as the path of totality. This means that it's sometimes closer to Earth than other times. Total solar eclipses only occur when the moon is at just the right distance from Earth, making it appear the same size in the sky as the sun (or even slightly larger). And when solar eclipses fall on a date when the moon is at this greater distance from our planet, the moon doesn't completely block the sun. As <a href="https://www.space.com/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html"><u>the moon</u></a> passes directly in front of the sun and its shadow sweeps across Earth's surface, the temperature drops and the light takes on an eerie twilight quality. Birds and other animals go quiet. It's a spectacle unlike any other. And for millions today who were lucky enough to be in the path of totality across Greenland, Iceland and Spain, <a href="https://www.space.com/stargazing/solar-eclipses/total-solar-eclipse-has-begun-here-are-the-first-views-of-totality-aug-12-2026"><u>that's exactly what they experienced</u></a>. </p><p>"I cannot believe what I just witnessed. When this alignment happens, the moon casts its shadow along a line known as the path of totality. This means that it's sometimes closer to Earth than other times. Total solar eclipses only occur when the moon is at just the right distance from Earth, making it appear the same size in the sky as the sun (or even slightly larger). And when solar eclipses fall on a date when the moon is at this greater distance from our planet, the moon doesn't completely block the sun. &lt;p&gt;Hailing from Stockton, California (where he attended the same high school as NASA astronaut Jose Hernandez), Tariq studied print journalism and astronomy at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, earning a bachelor&#039;s degree in journalism in 1999 along with a minor in astronomy. He then served as a staff reporter for The Los Angeles Times covering education and city beats in La Habra and Fullerton in Orange County for the Our Times sections.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In 2000, Tariq became the city reporter for the Huntington Beach Independent, a weekly publication of the Los Angeles Times, covering local politics and events, crime, business and environmental issues. He left the Los Angeles Times in 2001 to study science journalism at New York University, where he earned a master&#039;s degree in 2002 from NYU&#039;s Science and Environmental Reporting Program (now the Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program) under the direction of space reporter William Burrows.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Tariq first joined Space.com as an intern in September 2001 while also serving as a research assistant for nutrition writer Gary Taubes and writing freelance projects, where his work appeared in The Scientist and Laboratory Equipment Magazine. He became a full-time reporter covering spaceflight in 2004, with this first launch being NASA&#039;s STS-114 Return to Flight mission in July 2005.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Tariq is also an Eagle Scout (yes, he has the Space Exploration merit badge) and went to Space Camp four times as a kid and a fifth time as an adult.
