Time and time again, one-sheet designs revert to a tried, tested, and tedious formula of Photoshopped (other design software is available) montage of famous faces from a movie. Many of them are presented in the same muddy monochrome — it's almost as if they've stepped out of a Zack Snyder movie — and you need a microscope to make out many of the details. Catching a theater-goer's eye seems a long way down anyone's list of priorities.

It hasn't always been this way, because the science fiction genre has been responsible for many of the best film posters ever made. In the 1950s, B-movies and even the occasional studio tentpole used their promos as unashamed generators of hype, commissioning artists to paint giant arachnids, giant monsters, and — in one notable 50-foot example — giant women. Embiggening the baddies was clearly one of the first things these artists were taught at poster school.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

They also refused to be constrained by minor inconveniences like plot details. Posters for both "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) and "Forbidden Planet" (1956) are built around angry robots carrying scantily clad women, even though neither film features any such scenes.

A decade or so later, space-set sci-fi movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) and "Silent Running" (1972) were opting for a rather more subdued approach. Indeed, their hardware-heavy one-sheets looked more like the covers of hard SF novels than movie posters. "2001"'s more famous conceptual "The Ultimate Trip" star child promos weren't created until Stanley Kubrick's epic was given a 1970 re-release, as movie execs tried to capitalize on its growing, though unintended, reputation as a psychedelic counter-culture classic.

But it's arguably two insanely influential movies released within two years in the late-'70s that laid down the blueprint for what a sci-fi movie poster could and should do — "Star Wars" and "Alien".

Disney

Disney

At first glance, the early posters for "A New Hope" look like the character montages that have gone on to become the Hollywood norm. Look closer, however, and there's genuine artistry to their composition.

Although Tom Jung's famous "Style A" poster is a galaxy far, far away from screen accurate — what's going on with Luke's lightsaber and six-pack? — it effortlessly captures the all-action essence of the movie. Tom Chantrell's (arguably) even-more-iconic "Style C" design unites all the key players in a wonderfully kinetic collage of laser fire, lightsabers, and X-wings.

It's a sub-genre of poster art that the late Drew Struzan (who passed away in 2025) would subsequently go on to master. His legendary, hand-painted designs for the likes of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", the "Star Wars" Special Editions, the "Star Wars" prequels, "Blade Runner" and (yes, really) "The Muppet Movie" have laid down a marker for every draughtsperson who's followed. "I want the poster to look like an adventure," Struzan told SlashFilm in 2021.

20th Century Fox

Universal Pictures

In 1979, "Alien"'s famous "In space no one can hear you scream" design helped to popularize the conceptual one-sheet, as a single extraterrestrial egg hinted at the horrors Ridley Scott had in store.

Many of the most memorable posters of the '80s, '90s, and '00s opted for a single abstract image, whether it was ET and Elliott silhouetted against the Moon, an alien spacecraft hovering over New York for "Independence Day", or the minimalist, Happy Meal-friendly logos of "Ghostbusters" and "Jurassic Park".

Struzan's famous poster for John Carpenter's "The Thing" (the one with a faceless guy in a parka) was born out of necessity, the artist having been given little information beyond the fact that it was a loose remake of 1951's "The Thing from Another World". "[I had to] find a way of making nothing into something," Struzan later said of a design he reportedly created over a single night. It's fair to say he succeeded.

20th Century Fox

Paramount Pictures

One thing all these designs have in common is that — as well as being great adverts for their respective movies — they're bona fide works of art. It's a tradition modern creators like the brilliant Matt Ferguson (and notable exceptions like "Alien Romulus" and "Arrival") are doing their best to keep alive — even though the lobby of a contemporary multiplex is less likely to be confused for an art gallery than it might once have been.

Even with the caveat that we tend to remember the great stuff and forget the duds, modern movie posters are rarely as good as they used to be. With montages often based around the contractual importance of respective stars, too many look like they've been created by committee rather than a single visionary artist — the design most executives, agents, and lawyers disliked least, rather than the one a few loved.

Can there be any other explanation for "Transformers" one-sheets that look like they've been passed through a filter of sludge, or an "Avengers: Age of Ultron" design so crowded that it looks like Marvel's answer to "Where's Waldo?".

Paramount Pictures

Marvel Studios / Disney

Maybe Hollywood doesn't care anymore. Maybe their market research tells them that identikit montages get the best results at the box office, or that traditional one-sheets are small fry next to social media and trailers when it comes to getting bums on theater seats.

But if the measure of a good movie poster is something that you'd want to put in a frame and hang on your wall, the current generation is (mostly) lacking.

So, whether or not "Supergirl" flies, let's celebrate the film's stylish, memorable poster art as a wonderful break from the status quo.
</dc:content>

But now the Woman of Tomorrow has her own trailer for fans to enjoy, which you can see above.

To unveil this brash teaser trailer, DC Studios' Gunn and Safran organized a special invitation-only influencer event in New York City on Sunday, Dec. 8, that also included Alcock and "Supergirl" director Craig Gillespie ("I, Tonya," "Cruella"), where this amusing sneak peek was screened before being officially revealed online for all to enjoy.

Blondie's 1980 pop-punk hit "Call Me" is used to great effect as this rowdy preview rolls out following her memorable entrance in the post-credit scene of "Superman" to show Kara in a depressed mood, extinguishing a flaming cocktail while obviously inebriated.

"Twenty-three will be the best year yet," she sadly states to a nearby Krypto.

It's a hopeful message, encouraging people to treat each other better rather than fall into the cynical trappings of modern society. It isn't a new concept by any means, since another TV show about the Man of Steel's famous cousin laid the foundation for this bright, buoyant world where superheroes wear their emotions on their sleeves (and capes).

Premiering on Oct. 26, 2015, the "Supergirl" TV series marked the third entry into the burgeoning Arrowverse – an interconnected television universe featuring different DC series. Funnily enough, it was meant to be separate at first, but once the show moved from CBS to The CW in its second season, it integrated into the wider storyline. It was a strange time for the DC brand, though, mostly due to its cinematic endeavours attempting to build a darker alternative to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), while the Arrowverse proved to be a smorgasbord of tone. "Arrow" brooded and "The Flash" brought levity, but "Supergirl" became the heart of it all.

Inspired by the comic book stories that came before it, "Supergirl" follows the adult Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), also known as Kara Zor-El, who becomes Supergirl. Years prior, Kara was sent from Krypton to Earth to protect her younger cousin, Kal-El. However, her ship was thrown off course and she spent 24 years trapped in the Phantom Zone. Eventually, Kara arrived on Earth, where she discovered that Kal-El was already established as Superman and no longer needed her protection. Her cousin placed her under the care of foster parents, Eliza (Helen Slater) and Jeremiah Danvers (Dean Cain), and their daughter, Alex (Chyler Leigh), so that Kara experienced an ordinary upbringing, despite her extraordinary origin.

Split image showing three covers for Supergirl comics. (Image credit: DC Comics)

Kara's journey isn't only about her deciding to use her superpowers to help the world as Supergirl, but it's also about reconciling her Kryptonian heritage with the life she builds on Earth. She experiences a crisis of identity in this regard: Is she Kara Danvers, Kara Zor-El, or Supergirl? It's no different from what her cousin experiences in "Superman." When they come to appreciate that they're the masters of their own destinies and not defined by their identities, labels, or powers, that's when they unlock the full potential of their greatest quality: humanity.

To paraphrase the Man of Steel's monologue in "Superman," they're as human as anyone. They love. They get scared. They wake up every morning, and despite not knowing what to do, they put one foot in front of the other, and try to make the best choices that they can. They screw up all the time, but that is being human, and that's their greatest strength.

Benoist understood this about the character from the get-go. "I love her humanity," Benoist told KryptonSite months before "Supergirl" debuted. "She is an alien, [but] I love that she really has a lot of discovering to do, and growth, and makes mistakes. I think she's so relatable, and I just want to stay true to that."

This enables Kara to walk between both worlds and maintain compassion and respect for every living being on Earth and elsewhere. A storyline in the fourth season sees Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) pulling puppet strings in the formation of the Children of Liberty, an anti-alien group. (Oddly similar to Nicholas Hoult's Luthor's plans in "Superman" too, isn't it?) Kara opposes this hate group, fighting the calculated acts of disinformation, intolerance, and bigotry.

<img id="EE87xjgsdr2UoN6ttKgTib" name="Supergirl teams up with The Flash_Supergirl TV Show" alt="Still from the Supergirl TV show. Television)

It's in these moments that Kara does something even more powerful than any superhuman feat: She inspires those around her to be everyday selfless heroes and stand up for what's right. Throughout "Supergirl," Kara demonstrates how she can't solve the universe's problems alone. All the power in the world means nothing, because it's people who matter. Resultantly, Kara motivates and rallies other superpowered and non-superpowered individuals to share in the hope of a better tomorrow. No matter the odds, the circumstances, or the apathy of others, Kara proves that only through kindness can people be the positive change they want to see in the world. A certain James Gunn must have heeded this message, while doodling the Mighty Crabjoys logo in his notebook.

Rotten Tomatoes ranked "Supergirl" as the ninth-best superhero TV show of all time, ahead of critically acclaimed series like "Daredevil," "Smallville," and "Legion." While a controversial decision for sure, one cannot argue that "Supergirl" differentiates itself through its unapologetic positivity and feelgood factor. It's also remarkable how the series never set out with the intention to merge with or create a wide-spanning universe with cameos, crossovers, and canon fodder, but it happened organically. Even so, it never came at the cost of everything else, as Kara remained the beating heart of the show and Arrowverse. Much how it should be, especially when many comic book shows and films are guilty of putting franchise-building over good storytelling.

Of course, there would be no Supergirl without Superman, and the show eventually introduced its own Man of Steel, played by Tyler Hoechlin (who went on to have his own spinoff, "Superman & Lois"). Despite David Corenswet sharing an uncanny resemblance to Henry Cavill, he's certainly more akin to Hoechlin's Supes – goofy, charming, good, and hopeful – lending more credence to the belief that Gunn looked to the Arrowverse for inspiration rather than Zack Snyder's DC Extended Universe.

<img id="a2TLJ5mxj6fMcQoX4HuEtU" name="Supergirl and Superman smiling at each other_Supergirl TV Show" alt="Still from the Supergirl TV series. Television)

Gunn's DC Universe (DCU) is now in full force, taking further shape and expanding its breadth with each new chapter. Unquestionably, "Superman" showcased the same elements of charm, heart, and humor found in "Supergirl," yet it remains to be seen how Kara Zor-El herself is set to be portrayed in the DCU. Milly Alcock's brief cameo in "Superman" marks a stark difference to Benoist's version of the character, but this could change with the release of 2026's "Supergirl" movie – or maybe it won't.

Regardless, the "Supergirl" TV show left its imprint tattooed on the fabric of the DCU, and even other modern comic book adaptations. In a time in which human kindness has become seen as some kind of weakness or point of ridicule, this series encourages everyone to do the opposite. By becoming the light in a darkened world, everyone becomes a firefly that helps to illuminate the way back home to each other. Now, that's punk rock.

"Supergirl" is available to watch on Amazon, Apple TV, and other streaming services in the US and UK.
</dc:content>

James Gunn's "Superman" promotes kindness as the new punk rock.

For decades, that Big Blue Boy Scout from Krypton, known as Superman, has been basking in all the limelight, and it's high time some other members of the noble House of El were given their due respect. Of course, we’re talking about Supergirl, aka Kara Zor-El, the Man of Steel's flaxen-haired cousin who'll soon be showcased in her first Hollywood feature film in 40 years.

DC Studios' "Supergirl" is set to soar into theaters this summer, and we've compiled all the bits and pieces of intelligence we could find to bring avid fans an up-to-date guide. Originally titled "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," James Gunn confirmed to Rolling Stone that the subtitle had been axed, saying, "I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing."

She might live in Superman's all-encompassing shadow, but some of that legacy territory might make a seismic shift when Kara takes flight in this rougher, edgier cinematic showcase.

Now let's lift off with everything we know about "Supergirl."

When will "Supergirl" be released?

The "cameras rolling" shot shared on social media by DC Studios' James Gunn (Image credit: James Gunn/DC Studios)

"Supergirl" is officially slated to be released in theaters and IMAX on June 26, 2026.

That could certainly change, as studios often shuffle and shift drop dates in accordance with post-production work, reshoot delays, and sudden appearances of competing movies also choosing that specific date.

If you want to catch a sneak peek of Supergirl early, though, you're in luck, because she turns up in the post-credits sequence for director James Gunn’s "Superman" that dropped in theaters back in July 2025.

How to watch Supergirl

(Image credit: DC Studios / Warner Bros)

"Supergirl" will be launching exclusively in theaters when it drops on June 26, 2025.

While we don't have any confirmation at this time, HBO Max is the home of DC when it comes to streaming services, so we'd expect "Supergirl" to turn up on the streamer a few months after its debut in theaters.

HBO Max is the home of DC Studios on streaming.
