NASA's Cassini spacecraft captured this close-up view of one of these propellers, informally named Earhart, in Saturn's A ring on March 22, 2017. To the right of the propeller is the 200-mile-wide (320-kilometer-wide) Encke Gap, a space in Saturn's rings caused by the orbit of a moon called Pan, which is about 1,000 times more massive than Earhart. If Earhart were as big as Pan, it might have enough gravity to clear a similar gap. But the moonlet is only massive enough to create this small, propeller-shaped opening.
                                                            <media:text>Saturn's 'Earhart' Propeller</media:text>

He made observations with three filters: hydrogen alpha (Ha), sulphur (S2) and ionized oxygen (O3). Chadha said he "knew from imaging the target in the past that hydrogen was the most effective to bring out the detail." However, the project "will remain unfinished, as I didn't capture enough S2 and O3 to really make the image stand out," he said. But even without that additional data, the Bubble Nebula looks bright and beautiful in the resulting image. — Hanneke Weitering
                                                            <media:text>'Unfinished' Bubble Nebula </media:text>
