Tech Today: MicroSizers
Merlin Roadster

Tomy's tiny MicroSizers remote control cars are one of the hottest toys of 2002. Straddling the line between Hot Wheels and slot cars, MicroSizers are about 2.5 inches in length. At that size you can fit an entire garageful in your pocket.

Due to be released in the U.S. in August, MicroSizers are already a growing fad in the UK and their native Japan where they are known as Bit Char-Gs ("Bit Charge"). Licensed models from manufacturers like Nissan, Honda and Subaru, are available off-the-shelf.

But where the cars really shine is in their extensive customization options. Aftermarket upgrades are available to alter nearly every aspect of your micro-hoopty. And we're not just talking about stickers and body colors. You'll be able to replace and adjust the suspension, gearing, tires, or swap out the motor for maximum power. Motors range from the sedate 10,000 rpm model, to a wild and wooly 30,000 rpm monster.

Granted, at this size you're not going to get great mileage. Luckily filling 'er up is just a matter of docking your ride to the remote control unit. A 45-second charge will allow a 2-minute run, with a range up to 10 feet away. And since MicroSizers come with one of two different control frequencies, that means you and a friend can go dragstripping all over the kitchen floor without getting your signals crossed.

Imported Bit Char-G models come with a few more options than the American versions, such as four different control frequencies and different body styles.
