Clouded Out? Watch an Eclipse Webcast By Robert Roy Britt Senior Science Writer posted: 12:37 pm ET 07 November 2003

EMBARGOED FOR If weather prevents you from enjoying the total lunar eclipse Saturday night, there are some options. A few groups around the world will -- weather permitting -- run live webcasts of the event. And SPACE.com will provide photos of the eclipse by early Sunday morning. Here are the planned webcasts: - In The Netherlands and Belgium, the Copernicus Public Observatory and Mira Public Observatory are working in cooperation with the Dutch educational websites Astronet and Kennislink (Knowledge Link). Go >>>
- Nojum, the astronomy magazine of Iran. Go >>>
- Saros Group scientific expeditions, from the Canary Islands. Go >>>
- Fayetteville State University Observatory in North Carolina (cloudy weather expected). Go >>>
- Two non-English sites, one in Israel and one in Italy, also plan webcasts.
Some observatories and planetariums are hosting eclipse-watching events for local residents. Check with your local planetarium, which you might find via a web search or by calling the astronomy department of a local university. If your weather is clear, you need no assistance to enjoy the eclipse. The naked eye will perform just fine. If you have binoculars or a small telescope, you'll get a better view of the subtle colors expected from this eclipse.
