WASHINGTON — Boeing Co. notified 85 employees they will be laid off in 60 days due to changes in the company’s work on the international space station, Boeing reported July 20.
The employees at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Fla., are being laid off because Boeing’s station work at the launch site has been cut back as the station moves from development to operations, Ann Beach, Boeing’s spokeswoman at Kennedy, said.
The cuts affects the Payload Ground Operations Contract and programs that support Boeing’s Human Space Flight and Exploration effort.
The layoffs are not related to recent NASA budget cuts and station cost overruns, Beach said.
Boeing employs more than 2,700 people at Kennedy and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to support the station, space shuttle, Delta launch vehicles and other NASA and U.S. Air Force work. Boeing is trying to move most of the employees affected by the layoffs to other areas of operations, Beach said.
Beach declined to say how much money Boeing expects to save through the workforce cuts.
