QUOTABLE MOMENTS

Cade has come to the Winchala reservation, where a small tribe is about to vote on whether or not to build more casinos on tribal land. While playing -- and winning -- at blackjack, he talks to the dealer, who is looking forward to more jobs and money from a new casino.

The dealer tells Cade that the tribal council will decide the issue by hearing arguments from both sides and then voting. The elder Lonetree is expected to speak against the new casinos.

The dealer thinks Lonetree is a "dinosaur," driven by his dislike of white men. According to the dealer, the issue "is not about red and white -- it’s about green."

Cade finds Lonetree playing golf. He pretends to be "Todd Kowalski," a reporter from the Gaming Chronicles who is interviewing tribal members on the vote.

Lonetree does not give him a warm reception – golf is the only think he likes about the white world. He suspects that Cade works from one of the corporate interests looking to develop casinos for the tribe, and has been sent by Alex to influence him.

Single white male seeks brother

A bounty hunter named Dan McGwire passes Cade’s picture around the casino. He is sent to the blackjack dealer, who reluctantly accepts a bribe and tells him that Cade went to see Lonetree.

After Lonetree sends him away, Cade finds Alex and interviews him. Alex claims that he respects Lonetree’s opinion, but that his methods are backward – progress doesn’t necessarily undermine spirituality.

While he doesn’t quite come out and say it, Alex hints that he is more than willing to work with corporate interests to rebuild Indian culture. He has no hatred for the white man, saying, "We’re all brothers on this planet."

Cade checks on Alex with Eddie, who has taken up weight lifting in an effort to get fit for an email penpal. According to Eddie, Alex is "Mr. Clean" – he only takes home a salary of $30,000 and donates a lot of money to charity.

Empowerment is good

Cade isn’t convinced by Alex’s clean-cut image, and asks Eddie to do some more digging. He also wants to know more about the "cimmis" Nostradamus mentioned -- Eddie has identified it as a supernatural spirit that empowers a tribe and brings it wealth.

While Cade and Eddie compare notes on Alex, Alex and a woman from the casino compare notes on Cade. They’ve found out his true name and profession, but even though Alex thinks the name is familiar, they decide not to involve the Gua command.

Their best guess is that Cade plans to rob the casino, and they decide to appoint a couple of large gentlemen to dissuade him. The decision made, they turn themselves towards more recreational pursuits.

As they kiss passionately, flushes of heat briefly distort their faces. Both Alex and the woman are Gua agents!

Shortly thereafter, two men waylay Cade as he walks through the reservation. They beat him savagely, but flee when a wolf appears from the woods.

Cade passes out from the beating, but as he does so he has a vision of the wolf turning into a Winchala woman.

Healing and good fellowship

Alex and the woman can’t believe that a spirit drove off the men. Neither can Lonetree, who has taken Cade in, prepared a healing poultice for him, and demanded to know what he’s up to.

Cade tells him of the vision and reveals that he’s investigating a "group" that might have an interest in the casino vote.

Lonetree doesn’t believe him, especially about the vision. The woman Cade describes sounds a lot like "Woman of the Woods," a local spirit, and Lonetree thinks the idea that she’d protect a white man is blasphemy.

As Cade leaves, Eddie provides more bad news: he’s learned that there’s a large bounty on Cade’s head.

Eddie thinks Cade should give up on this mission and leave the reservation, but Cade still wants to know what’s going on.

Lonetree approaches when Cade and Eddie end their conversation. He’s changed his mind, telling Cade, "I’m listening. Let’s just hope you’ve got something to say."

Dan McGwire enters Lonetree’s empty house and begins to search it.

Always try the door before you pick the lock

Cade and Lonetree attempt a discreet surveillance of the council offices, a plan made somewhat difficult by Lonetree’s truculent questions.

As they wait for something to happen, Lonetree tells Cade the tale of the Woman of the Woods. She was the sole survivor of a U.S. Cavalry attack, who ran six miles to warn the next village and drove off the horsemen by summoning a pack of wolves.

Alex passes through the offices, and stops to hide something in a cabinet. Cade decides to find out what.

He starts to pick the lock – muttering about how he’s confirming his untrustworthy image to Lonetree – but Lonetree points out that he could simply try the door, which is unlocked.

The cabinet is locked, but Cade quickly cracks it open. Lonetree quickly recognizes the wrapped parchments inside.

Aliens and spirits: natural enemies

They are the teachings of the tribe, stolen seven years ago when Alex joined the tribe. They contain the symbols and rituals involved in calling spirits.

Alex passes through the offices again. Cade and Lonetree hide, then slip out the back.

In Lonetree’s house, the bounty hunter dusts a glass and finds Cade’s fingerprints. He smiles.

Lonetree wants to confront Alex, and find out more about the group that may be behind him. As they return to Lonetree’s house, Cade promises to tell him about it.

When they enter the house, however, they’re interrupted by McGwire. He shoots a tranquilizer dart at Cade, who pushes Lonetree to safety and runs.

Despite the opening credits, Cade does run and hide

After making backwards tracks and leaving a scrap of clothing caught on a tree, Cade hides in the bushes. The bounty hunter is fooled and goes the wrong way.

Meanwhile, Lonetree goes to the casino and confronts Alex about the scrolls. He calls Alex a "disgrace," announces that he has found the scrolls and tells him "Kowalski was right" about Alex.

Alex shakes him, however, by revealing Cade’s true identity and long string of murder raps.

After Lonetree leaves, the woman tells Alex she’s checked with the Gua command and found out how dangerous Cade is. She and Alex are worried that Lonetree has found the scrolls – they have power the Gua do not understand yet, and keeping them hidden is vital to creating a gap between the Indian community and their spirits.

Alex wants the scrolls retrieved and Lonetree removed before he can damage their cause with the council. The woman promises to take care of it.

Threats and allegations

Lonetree confronts Cade about his identity, saying that he should never have trusted a white man. Cade tells Lonetree about the aliens, which doesn’t improve Lonetree’s opinion of him.

The old man retorts by accusing Cade of being crazy, while Cade accuses him of being blinded by his hate.

Cade insists he's not the enemy -- "The aliens are your enemy. the Gua."

Lonetree is surprised to hear the name the spirit has warned him about.

After Cade storms off, he gets instructions from Eddie for staying in the woods and avoiding the bounty hunter. Unfortunately, Eddie’s instructions take him right into McGwire’s arms.

Just a little walk in the woods

The bounty hunter escorts him through the forest, warning him that while he’s worth more alive than dead, he’s going to deliver Cade either way. He refuses to tell Cade whom he’s working for.

Lonetree comes to the rescue, however, stopping McGwire with a rifle to his head. Cade grabs and searches him, learning his identity, but McGwire still won’t give up his clients.

Cade knocks him out and binds him, then explains to Lonetree who the Gua are.

Doesn’t anybody knock anymore?

Following in McGwire’s footsteps, the woman from the casino searches Lonetree’s house.

Cade tells Lonetree that the Gua plan is to split people – to drive them away from their core values. Both gambling and race hatred play into the Gua’s hands.

With the tribal vote imminent, Lonetree contacts the Woman in the Woods for strength and guidance. Cade joins him in the ritual, and Lonetree explains each step of the medicine.

The woman searches the wood for Cade and Lonetree.

A wolf howls and runs through the woods. As the woman finds Lonetree and prepares to shoot him, the wolf attacks her.

Cade and Lonetree are startled by the distinctive sound of a Gua dissolving. Lonetree asks, "What the hell was that?"

Cade looks around at the empty woods and says, "Good news, I think."

Extraterrestrial speak with forked tongue

Alex sums up his case for the tribal council. In Lonetree's absence, none of the other elders make any rebuttal, so Alex calls for the vote.

Lonetree arrives with the scrolls, just in time to stop the vote.

In a brief speech, he tells the council "gambling is an opiate, not just for us but for all people." It’s another form of subjugation from the white man, just like whiskey.

Lonetree’s claim gives Alex an opening. Noting Cade’s presence, he accuses the elder of hypocrisy.

The old man shows the scrolls and quotes a prayer that recommends pity and tolerance for the white man.

"I know the truth about gambling," he tells Alex, "and that man has shown me the truth about you."

Lonetree calls the vote – and the others vote decisively against expanding the casinos.

Insane with anger, Alex grabs a bow and arrow from the tribe’s collection of historic artifacts and shoots at Lonetree, transfixing his hand.

He gets ready to shoot again, but Cade grabs a tomahawk and throws it across the room, burying it in Alex’s chest. The Gua dies and dissolves.

As they leave the council, Lonetree thanks Cade, and invites him to participate in the most sacred ritual of all: a good round of golf.
