From television to planetariums, the husband-wife team of Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan lives on despite the passing of the popular astronomerFrom television shows to planetaria, the husband-wife team of Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan lives on despite the passing of the popular astronomer. Ann Druyan collaborated with Sagan for 25 years on such projects as the television series Cosmos and the book Contact. Now, she has co-written Passport to the Universe, the new Hayden Planetarium space show with fellow Cosmos alum Steven Soter. As a team, Sagan, Druyan and Soter believed that education plus entertainment equals inspiration. The continued popularity of Cosmos is proof that the equation works. Druyan says she and Soter envisioned the new planetarium show in the same vein -- a "cosmic initiation ceremony" for the Rose Center. Druyan and Sagan strove for clarity in everything they wrote together. "He felt honor bound to retrace his own thought steps, in order to remember what it was like before he understood things and that was a great method for Steve and me" in writing Passport. Druyan says that she and Soter, "felt like we were channeling [Carl] half the time we were writing it." The audience will recognize Sagans ideas in the script -- the "Pale Blue Dot" of Earth and his realization that, "We are star-stuff." Narrator Tom Hanks guides the audience on a fantastic journey from the inner planets to the edges of the observable universe. Then, as your seats rumble, your eyes are dazzled as you speed back home through a black hole. Someone told Druyan about a little girl who saw an early preview of the show. When it was over she asked her father, "Daddy, are we still on Earth?" The final product is accessible to everybody -- very clear and certainly very powerful. "It was the beauty and clarity of the [Rose Centers] design that influenced Steve and me to keep the message and the story as clear as possible. The facts themselves are astonishing."
