The intrepid Dana Scully will keep looking for the truth for one last year, Fox Television announced Tuesday, although the fate of Fox Mulder remains uncertain.
Fox said The X-Files will continue into an eighth -- and presumably final season -- next fall.
Gillian Anderson, who plays Scully, had already signed onto the eighth season. However, while the network confirmed her participation in new X-Files episodes, it said only that "negotiations with co-star David Duchovny," who plays Mulder, "continue regarding his return."
Duchovny's relationship with the show has become increasingly strained in recent years, culminating in a 1999 lawsuit the actor brought against 20th Century Fox claiming the media giant had cheated him out of millions in residual syndication profits.
X-Files creator Chris Carter, who has also recently renegotiated his contract with Fox, had previously doubted whether the show would go on without Duchovny.
