Since Gillian Anderson's new partner on The X-Files made his name playing an unstoppable robot from the future, the moody series' flat affect and reservoirs of emotional reserve should remain intact to the end.
Robert Patrick, best known as the T-1000 liquid metal robot from Terminator 2, will appear in the entirety of The X-Files' eighth and final season, Fox said late Thursday. The official statement confirmed reports in entertainment daily Variety that had been circulating throughout the day.
According to Fox, Patrick will not replace David Duchovny (who plays Fox Mulder), but will fill the void on the show left by Duchovny's decision to scale back his involvement.
Duchovny will appear in only half of the episodes in the upcoming season, which is tentatively set to begin November 5.
Variety also reported that the eighth season will be shorter than originally announced, with only 20 episodes -- not 26, as originally slated -- going into production.
"Patrick's character will be the virtual mirror opposite of Duchovny's alien-hunting, conspiracy-loving Fox Mulder," X-Files creator Chris Carter told the newspaper, adding that Patrick's addition to the cast could be the show's chance to continue beyond the eighth season, which most had expected to be its last.
