WHAT HAPPENED
Janeway is in her quarters. She looks grim. Tuvok has just arrived, summoned by her. She accusingly says he's been keeping something from her, and that she's finally separated fact from rumor. He seems puzzled. She stands before the replicator, then presents him with a birthday cake.
Captain to the bridge. There's been a distress call from a small vessel. On screen -- it's Kes, looking considerably older than last we saw her. She urgently asks permission to come aboard. It's granted. But her vessel comes in fast, rams the starship. Moreover, Kes has beamed herself aboard. We see her walking down a hall as explosions go off. She looks angry. (more spoilers)
ANALYSIS
"Fury" is a strong episode that raises the intriguing question of whether Janeway's management of Voyager, however good her intentions, might be deleterious to the lives and careers of crew members.
The episode strives to give an optimistic answer to that question, at least in this case. But some observers, contemplating matters more broadly, may be less than reassured.
In any event, Kes' rage makes for an appealing contrast to the sweetness she displayed as a crew member. And Neelix's grimness as he lays eyes on his much-changed former girlfriend is memorable.
DANGLING PLOT THREADS
Do these latest temporal dislocations disturb the time-cops who will run Starfleet half a millennium hence?
REALITY CHECK
As often occurs on Star Trek, the episode makes use of tachyons, time-traveling particles whose existence has not been detected in our universe.
TUNE IN NEXT WEEK
When Voyager meets the Next Generation in "Life Line", you know Marina Sirtis is just a phone call away. But will our friend the Doctor survive the experience?
