A playwright on a feudal world finds
inspiration to write the saga of Voyager.
Written by Joe Menosky

WHAT HAPPENED
A play is in progress, with robed actors
on stage and a chorus reciting lines. Surprisingly, considering the archaic
appearance of this theater, they are talking about the Delta Flyer and
B'Elanna
Torres.
Kelus, the poet/playwright, gets a
standing ovation, along with his acting troupe. He tells the audience he
"found" B'Elanna, and now is passing on her story. There may be more installments,
he hints.
But the theater's patron -- a burly,
overbearing man -- demands another episode of the "Voyager
saga" in one week. Kelus is disturbed at having to produce content
under this tight deadline.
He walks to the Delta Flyer. B'Elanna
is there. Her arms are tied, impeding her attempt to strike him. "Who are
you?" she demands. "I am Kelus, the poet -- your servant," he says humbly.

ANALYSIS
"Muse" is an inspired episode, one
that adeptly combines drama, wit and atmosphere. The candlelit archaism
of the theater and its surrounding society make for an appealing backdrop,
Kelus, his actors and his patron are plausible characters, and B'Elanna
reveals an intriguing creative side to her personality.
The other Voyager regulars play relatively
marginal roles here, allowing the interaction of B'Elanna with the locals
to take center stage. Harry
is amusingly missing-in-action for much of the episode.
WHAT WE LEARN
Tuvok
can stay awake for over 10 days, but this takes its toll.
DANGLING PLOT THREADS
Will B'Elanna continue to have some
involvement in the performing arts?
Will the patron change his belligerent
ways?
REALITY CHECK
A disagreement between Kelus and an
older poet about the importance of truth is somewhat reminiscent of contemporary
literary debates.
TUNE IN NEXT WEEK
Former crew member Kes returns -- with
a vengeance. Does she blame Janeway for destroying her career? Find out,
in "Fury".
