When the final adventures of Star Trek: Voyager hits television screens in October, it won't be on either UPN or CBS -- at least, not exactly.
Paramount said late Tuesday that the name of UPN, the network it co-founded with one-time partner Chris-Craft, will change to "The Paramount Network" on January 1.
Since Chris-Craft abandoned its share in the network in March -- for a paltry $5 million -- UPN executives said the name change "made sense."
Voyager will continue to serve as one of the renamed network's flagship shows, remaining in its Wednesday night timeslot. New episodes will begin October 4.
Fifth Trek "next fall" on the former UPN
Furthermore, there seem to be few plans to move future Trek incarnations to CBS, which Paramount parent company Viacom bought last September for $35.6 billion in stock and assumed debt.
Although fans had speculated that the as-yet-unnamed successor to Voyager, which winds down next spring, will move to CBS, Dean Valentine, UPN CEO, said Trek would likely remain with his network -- whatever it calls itself.
Speaking at a Television Critics Association junket, Valentine said the fifth live-action Star Trek series would likely premiere on the Paramount Network in the fall of 2001.
