Back on earth, the Stargate Command siren sounds, signaling an off-world activation

Back on earth, the Stargate Command siren sounds, signaling an off-world activation.

Rothman stumbles through the gate's ripply surface looking tired and slightly hysterical. He relates the events of the assault and the death of his commander between sprays from his inhaler, describing the attacker as an Unas, a member of the alien race the Goa’uld originally used as hosts.

This is not surprising, since Daniel had theorized that this planet was the homeworld of the Goa'uld. Teal’C and Carter postulate that the Unas that abducted Jackson might be feral, acting independently and on Goa'uld orders.

Stockholm syndrome

A rescue team gates back to the planet. Leaving a few men to guard the Stargate, SG-1 sets out with Teal'c on point.

Stargate SG-1 [official]

Meanwhile, the creature is leading Daniel along by a rope attached to his bound wrists. Desperate for rest, Daniel tries to fall down, but this only frustrates the creature -- as do the archaeologist's attempts to use his radio to contact help.

They finally stop. While Daniel rests, the alien performs a strange meditative ritual. Being a culture geek, Daniel slips his tape recorder from his pocket and starts taking notes.

The Unas gets sick of his talking and growls at him, so Daniel starts trying to translate his language. A small remote scout plane -- what Stargate Command calls a "UAV" -- flies overhead, freaking the creature out.

Daniel then asks for a drink of water from the lake. The Unas leads him up to the lake but pulls him back when he puts his face down to drink, signaling that he wants Daniel to drink with his hands cupping the water and bringing it to his mouth. Daniel does this, then bolts when the pointy-toothed throwback is distracted.

That was too easy

He wanders a while but his captor finds him. In an inspired moment, he wades into the water -- the creature refuses to come in after him.

But that's for good reason. Just when Daniel thinks he's won, an eel-like creature swiftly moves toward him under the water. Jackson scrambles to shore but the huge Goa’uld snake leaps out of the water after him.

The Unas grabs and kills the snake.

Meanwhile, SG-1 has found the archaeological site, where all the personnel lie around dead.

Jack questions Rothman about the incident without much success before they find SG-12’s commander dazed on the road.

He seems to be in shock. O’Neill obviously questions the man's competence, but they take him along anyway because they can’t spare the manpower to bring him back.

SG-1 camps by the water, Jack takes first watch.

Whose initiation is this, anyway?

Daniel and the Unas camp in a dark cave, where the alien makes a fire and proceeds to roast the snake. A kind of camaraderie and understanding begins to form as Daniel first tries to make small talk, then offers the creature a candy bar.

Later, Daniel discovers intricate drawings in the cave, leading him to believe that the Unas is undergoing a rite of passage.

However, the creature finds him and, seemingly upset, cuts Daniel's face. Using the blood, he then draws a picture of himself dragging Daniel.

Omens in the night

Back at the SG-1 camp, Jack ask Rothman if he notices anything weird about Major Coburn. Being the useless twit he is, Rothman has no answers.

Teal’C is on guard when a symbiote jumps from the lake. He terminates the snake with a casual over-the-shoulder blast.

When the rest of the group rushes to the shore to see what happened, Teal’C explains that they may have been compromised by the Goa’uld from the lake.

To prevent a Goa'uld-infested teammate from running amok at Stargate Command, he has to tie everyone up and leave them for the team at the gate to pick up and take back to earth for testing.

They contact the gate team and Teal’C binds his teammates, then leaves in search of Daniel.

Daniel and the lion

In the cave the Unas sleeps and Daniel thinks about killing him with a big rock but decides against it.

When the Unas gets up Daniel notices that the creature's hand has a bullet in it. He cuts out the shrapnel and cleans the wound, but further attempts to talk his way out garner little success.

Before the creature drags him away again, he manages to write something on the cave wall.

Back at the camp, Rothman is complaining about not being a snake and being stuck there. As if on cue, Coburn's eyes glow and he attacks O’Neill, but Teal’c bursts out of the bushes and blasts him with his battle staff.

As Teal'c explains, it was only a test -- he knew a Goa’uld could break the bonds. When he goes to cut Rothman free, the academic's eyes also start to glow. Before being cut down, Rothman manages to injure a soldier.

More strange allies

Teal’c, Sam and Jack head off after Daniel, finding the cave and the sign that Daniel left for them.

They eventually track Daniel down just as his captor is presenting him to the Unas clan leader, apparently speaking for him not as prey, but as a friend.

The elder disagrees, discounting the younger Unas's claims that he has found something that can help their people.

When the elder attacks Daniel, Carter and Jack make their presence known by showering him with lead. Daniel’s Unas takes over and kills the elder, proclaiming that he is now leader with a long cry.

The rest of the tribe retreats. Daniel and the Unas have some final words and they part with what looks like an invitation for the future.
