Archaeological Rage

JACKSON: Right, Toss the symbiote head. All the kids are doing it.

ROTHMAN: You give me a million-year-old fossil and I'll tell you what it had for breakfast, but I'm not good with people. They're too recent.

WHAT HAPPENED

Daniel and Dr. Rothman (SG-1's second-string academic) are at an archaeological dig admiring some fossilized ancient Goa’uld remains. While Daniel records his notes on his walkman, Rothman tests the area for naquaada before going off to consult with the onsite military types.

Suddenly, a hidden form that has been observing Daniel leaps out of the woods and strikes. One of the soldiers pops a few rounds into the creature, but it does no good. After subduing the soldier, the intruder knocks Daniel unconscious and drags him away. (spoilers)

ANALYSIS

All in all, I was not at all disappointed by this episode, but there's no need to beat yourself up if you missed it.

This was a nice B episode, a welcome break after recent storylines focusing on interplanetary politics and the progress of Stargate Command's war preparations against the Goa'uld.

"The First Ones" offered some nice background on the origins of the Goa’uld and their first hosts. We also saw the death of Rothman, a recurring character who did little to distinguish himself, but rarely descended into the ranks of the actively annoying.
