O’Neill orders Carter to wire up the gate to allow SG-1 to head back to Earth.
Suddenly, Teal'c spots some flying shuttlecraft that Nyan identifies as local but hostile. Jack tells Carter to dial home but she needs five minutes prep time. The archaeologist suggests they run.
The shuttles fire a beam and captures Jack, Daniel and Sam -- only Teal'c and Nyan escape.
On the shuttle, Jack tries to ask for a commanding officer but is greeted with silence.
Then, Mallin emerges from the craft. She identifies the captured Earth people as the "aliens" she observed trying to open the gate.
Although Jack tries to charm his captors, he only gets zapped and pricked with a needle for his efforts. Rygar, the shuttle's commanding officer, indicates that SG-1's appearance on the planet must be some sort of Optrican trick to undermine loyal Bedrosian beliefs.
Meanwhile, a guard ambushes Teal'c in the forest. Although Teal'c soon makes short work of the hapless minion, he is shot as well and goes blind.
Nyan finds him later and drags him to shelter.
Power, faith and electric shocks
The Bedrosians leisurely examine the MALP and the rest of SG-1's equipment.
In particular, Rygar wants to know whether his prisoners are human. Blood analysis confirms that they are, but their records do not exist in the central registry.
Rygar tells his science officer, Parey, that this proves that the strangers are Optrican agents, sent as part of a grand hoax to sow doubt in the Bedrosian camp.
Warming to his subject matter, he then launches into a speech about how his people -- the Bedrosians -- have not spent their lives fighting a meaningless war against the Optricans and praying to a god that does not exist.
He orders his troops to learn what they can from the prisoners, then dispose of them.
The fourth prisoner
Nyan brings Teal'c to a cave that he uses to store supplies.
They talk of Nephertim, the god of the Bedrosians, but Teal'c recognizes this figure as a Goa'uld lord in the service of Ra.
Nyan decides that he must take Teal'c to the other scientists to show them the truth but Teal'c, already blind and injured, draws the line at being put on display to prove a theory. Instead, he insists that they save the rest of SG-1.
After the argument, Nyan leaves, supposedly to get supplies, leaving Teal'c blind and alone. He sits in a corner of the cave, feeling more scared and helpless then he has ever been before.
A little fun in the cages
Back to our imprisoned trio, now sitting in electrified square wire cages while Rygar interrogates them for details about Nyan and the fourth member of their team.
The Earth people try to explain who they are, a conversation that becomes very funny as Daniel and Sam try to be technical and reasonable while Jack tells him that wormholes are dug by giant worms and that they are here by magic.
Needless to say, the commander gets more upset the more they explain.
Back in the cave, Teal'c adjusts the Goa'uld larva that lives in his stomach. When Nyan returns, Teal'c explains that the larva was damaged in the blast, but once it heals itself it will repair his eyes.
Foreshadowing?
The Bedrosians find the body of the soldier that Teal'c killed. They question Daniel again about the fourth stranger and about a device they have dug up -- the camera pulls back and we can see that this artifact is a Dial Home Device.
Teal'c and Nyan argue some more about what they should be doing. Teal'c wants to go rescue SG-1 now and remains afraid that the archaeologist only wants to exhibit him to prove an ideological point.
Eventually, Teal'c relents, allowing Nyan to use a medical beam device to accelerate the healing process. Moreover, Nyan tells Teal'c about the DHD, which he saw when he went snooping.
More torture and interrogation in the cages.
Dad, we're in jail!
Back on Earth, Hammond reopens the stargate. He calls the SG-1 team on their handheld radio, but Rygar intercepts the call and lets the general know that his people have been captured.
The two men then have a confused discussion about how Hammond's "Optrican" agents pulled off the hoax. Rygar demands that Hammond -- who has no idea about the religious schism that SG-1 has been thrown into -- hand over everything he knows about stargate technology in exchange for our heroes' lives.
Meanwhile, SGC sends another MALP through the gate. Daniel tries to signal the drone, but Rygar notices and informs the general that any rescue attempt will result in the operatives' death. He then destroys the MALP.
You just need some Teal'c
While his eyes healed, Teal'c has come up with a plan of his own. He fires at an overhead shuttle to get its attention, then he and Nyan take out the crew when they leave to investigate.
When the shuttle arrives back at Rygar's camp, it provides a bit more of a bang than anticipated.
Nyan flees the craft and tells the Bedrosian soldiers that the other Optrican is in the woods. When the soldiers go see, Teal'c steps out and starts blasting.
Under cover of this diversion, Nyan sneaks in to the command tent, frees the prisoners and provides them with weapons. In a blistering firefight, Daniel dials home and all five escape through the gate.
Later, recovering in the infirmary, Nyan wonders what he will do now.
Daniel tells him that there is a place for him at Stargate Command as a research assistant.
It would be a great way to learn about your ancestors, explains the Earth-born archaeologist to his extraterrestrial colleague.
Then Nyan and Teal'c reaffirm the loyalty they gained in the cave, and another episode comes to an end.
