Jack's rather carefree attitude toward interstellar etiquette endangers Earth's alliance against the Goa'uld threat.

The Wit and Wisdom of Jack O'Neill
Jack: I do appreciate that you were the one that came to see me, that means something.

Daniel: No, no it doesn't. We drew straws. I lost.

Jack: If you promise to cut back on the melodrama, I'll consider crossing the line.

Jack: I'd rather be a thief and alive then honest and dead. I know it's a cliche but there it is.

Jack: To be fair I did it, Carter and Daniel protested, and Teal'C well he really didn't say anything but I could tell he was opposed by the way he cocked his head and raised his eyebrows.

Jack: Ah look who it is. Come to retrieve your vastly superior stuff. You know it would be a lot more superior if it wasn't so easy to steal.

GUEST STARS

Marie Stillin - Tollan chancellor

WHAT HAPPENED

We open in the triad chamber of the alien Tollan, where we most recently saw the team argue legal matters against the Goa'uld.

Jackson, Carter, Teal'C and O'Neill once again try to convince Travell, the high chancellor, to trade Earth some of the Tollan's extremely advanced weapons technology.

After a bit of unsuccessful negation, Jack decides to leave, feeling that the affair has become a waste of time. He goes on to rant about not having to "save their technologically superior butts."

On the way out, Jack casually steals a beam emitter, much to the dismay of the rest of his team.... (more spoilers)

ANALYSIS

This was a very strong episode that not only emphasized the interactions between Earth and its extraterrestrial allies but the bonds among the central cast of characters as well.

I particularly liked the two-sided chess game that seemed to illustrate Jack's situation.

If I could find fault in "Shades of Grey", it was that I figured out that the team was running a sting about half way through the episode. Still, not even this made the episode any less enjoyable for me.

TUNE IN NEXT WEEK

Our heroes find themselves used as playing pieces in an alien planet's internal struggle in "New Ground".
