In this concluding chapter of last week's cliffhanger, the SG-1 team must escape from a prison built to simulate the fires of Hell, but the team's adventures take a back seat to machinations among the alien System Lords.

The Wit and Wisdom of Jack O'Neill
On Torture: "They put that damn memory thing on me. And then they gaveme something that reminded me of the '70s."

On Loyalty: "She didn't tell you squat. And by the way, I won't either."

WHAT HAPPENED

Sinister alien Apophis has indeed returned. Not content with spending his time insulting and interrogating Daniel, Jack and company, he schemes to lure rival System Lord Sokhar into an ambush.

Against the backdrop of these interplanetary manipulations, our heroes have a relatively straightforward objective: escape from the prison planet Natoo, save Samantha's father and protect the secrets of their allies among the Goa'uld. Finding out what happened to Jolinar, a now-deceased alien who was once briefly symbiotically attached to Samantha, is a secondary goal.

Oblivious to everything happening on Natoo, poor Teal'C, left behind in an interstellar freighter orbiting the planet, gets involved in a deep-space dogfight. (more detailed spoilers)

ANALYSIS

In addition to the overarching focus on galactic Goa'uld politics, "The Devil You Know" provided some nice moments of drama. In particular, I liked the way the episode revisited the original movie plot of O’Neill’s son’s death. Samantha Carter's reunion with her father was also nicely handled.

Overall, the episode moved quickly, as it would have to in order to wrap up the ambitiously complicated storyline set up last week. However, the end seemed to come too soon and was ultimately predictable, with the villains escaping yet again to make trouble down the road.

TUNE IN NEXT WEEK

Reruns continue. In "Foothold", the team returns from a mission to find that the people at Stargate Command are not who they appear to be.
