ichael's Life Hangs in "The Balance" on Roswell

Michael returns to the Mesaliko Reservation to ask River Dog some questions, but becomes very sick in the process.

(original air date: December 15, 1999)

Quotable Moments

Alex: Why on earth . . . Excuse the phrase. Why would you be sent here to beginwith? I mean, what purpose could you possibly have?

Isabel: To wipe out the world: one annoying teenager at a time.

Maria (to Liz): Me? I'm Teflon, babe. Michael starts acting like a total loser? I just walk away. But you and Max -- you guys have got that whole look-in-my-eyes soulmate thing.

Isabel: I mean, haven't you ever felt different from everybody else? Like if you tried to reveal your true self to someone, they wouldn't understand?

WHAT HAPPENED

Liz floats -- emotionally, at least -- around the Crashdown Cafe. Even cleaning can't get her down, and when Michael and Max enter, it is obvious that Max only has eyes for Liz.

Both Maria and Michael make comments about each other to Liz and Max, and Michael confesses that that he and Maria have probably broken up. He's proved right when Liz gives Max a cherry cola and Maria charges Michael $1.25 for one.

While gathering his books to go, Max drops a page full of alien symbols (from "River Dog"). Michael asks what other information Max has been keeping from him. (more detailed spoilers)

ANALYSIS

The balance is somewhere between the extremes. It's about knowing when and whom to trust, and how much. It's about moderation, seeing one's priorities clearly and managing them.

It's one thing that, for the most part, our characters simply don't have.

Alex is overwhelmed by his inclusion into the inner circle. He wants to help, but he needs to temper that desire with some consideration about the appropriateness of his reactions, especially when others are around.

Liz is only too eager to drop everything to help Max. Yes, her time with him is magical -- but what about the work that she leaves behind for her friends when she follows Max to the reservation?

Whom does Max trust?

Max seems to have an extremely hard time trusting. He is not forthcoming about the alien symbols, he makes decisions for other people, and when it comes to Liz he doesn't even trust himself.

Now that Max has put the brakes on his relationship with Liz, he will have to face the consequences of that action. He may face her wrath at telling her what they should or should not be doing.

Coming out of his pod

Michael's affliction may be a watershed moment in his story. The people who care about him have shown their love unconditionally, and River Dog may become a mentor figure to him.

Despite all the drama of their relationship, Michael can see how devoted Maria is. Now all he has to do is figure out what to do about it.

WHAT WE LEARN

Max's favorite drink is cherry cola.

The aliens emerged from the pod and have grown up in human form.

After emerging from the pods, Max and Isabel found each other immediately; Michael came out of hiding later on.

The Parkers always leave a key under the mat.

River Dog saved the life of the other visitor years ago, the one he calls "Nacedo."
