MGM has announced that the science fiction anthology series -- the reinvention of the legendary '60s program of the same name -- will wrap up production with its 132nd episode.

According to entertainment daily Variety, the final episode, currently shooting in Vancouver, will be a sequel to fan favorite "Stitch in Time".

Amanda Plummer will reprise her Emmy-winning role in the episode, appearing as a time-traveling scientist who commits a string of murders in the past in order to "stop crime before it starts."

The story will air on Showtime in late August, appearing thereafter in syndication and on the SCIFI Channel.

Not a ratings problem

MGM attributed the decision to end the show to the expiration of its distribution contract with Showtime, and not to ratings, which were healthy by syndication standards.

Showtime has been the exclusive source for first-run Outer Limits episodes since the show began on that cable channel five years ago.

As such, the end of the agreed-upon Showtime run allowed MGM to end the series on what Hank Cohen, president of the studio's television entertainment division, called "a high note," Variety reported.

MGM will continue to produce Stargate SG-1 for Showtime and syndication.
