It turns out to be a crashed
but still airworthy airship. They set about repairing it.
Duke explains that Fifi has
died many times, and assures him that he won't like his next life -- he
was sent to Water by mistake, and didn't deserve to be there. When he dies
this time, he will belong to Duke.
The crew gets the airship
airborne. Unfortunately, keeping the ship aloft burns too much fuel.
As it sinks toward the desert,
Dead Kai leaps overboard and begins hiking across the desert. With the
amount of weight on board reduced, the airship drifts toward the red-hot
sea.
Duke be not proud
With Dead Kai gone, Xev’s
interest turns to Living Kai. She asks him to explain how there can be
two Kais, but all he can do is point out that one Kai is dead, and the
other Kai is alive.
The airship drifts over Duke
and Fifi's crashed moth. Although Stan argues that they can't afford to
add more weight to their ship, Xev descends to investigate.
Bunny recognizes Fifi and
tells the crew that he is the one who stole Kai's moths from Gametown.
Stan promises to send help when they reach the nearby city.
While Stan and Xev argue
the morality of stranding Duke and Fifi, Living Kai sets the airship down,
explaining that it is the right thing to do.
Duke and Fifi come aboard.
Duke and Living Kai appear to know one another. As the ship takes to the
air, the tension between the crew and their new arrivals mounts.
As Stan and Fifi bicker,
Duke stands up near the ship's rail. Kai draws his bow and shoots Duke
in the chest. Duke smiles and tells Kai, "There will be a next time."
He falls over the rail and
plunges to the ground below. Kai tells them that Duke deserved to die for
leading the attack against Water.
Four's company, five's
a crowd
The airship begins sinking
again. As it drops closer toward the sea of molten rock, Stan volunteers
Fifi to jump over the side. Naturally, Fifi refuses.
Bunny volunteers, but Living
Kai proposes putting the decision to a vote. Xev and Stan vote for Fifi.
Fifi and Bunny vote for Bunny.
Living Kai argues that Fifi
deserves to live the least, but as they try to throw him overboard, Bunny
prepares to jump. While the crew pulls her away from the edge, Fifi straps
himself to the ship.
Fortunately, the sun begins
passing behind Water. The air cools, allowing the crew to use less fuel
and table the question of whom to sacrifice.
They turn in for the night.
Stan snuggles up with Bunny. Xev curls up in a corner. Living Kai keeps
watch.
Fifi tells Living Kai that
he should join Xev, as "it's entirely obvious she's got the hots for you."
Instead, they discuss Fifi's service to Duke.
Fifi mentions that he noticed
the connection between Living Kai and Duke. Living Kai offers Fifi a deal.
Kiss me lively
Living Kai snuggles up to
Xev treating her exactly as she always dreamed dead Kai would. Their amorous
encounter is derailed by the sound of Bunny falling overboard into the
lava.
Stan accuses Fifi of pushing
her. Xev admits that she distracted Living Kai from his duties on watch.
As the crew fights exhaustion,
the airship approaches a city. The locals attack.
With their ship out of fuel,
Xev steers them into one of the spikes that surround the city's support
tower. Xev begins scaling the tower wall, leaving Stan alone with Living
Kai and Fifi.
Living Kai admits to Stan
that he isn't really Kai. He simply chose to wear the assassin's face.
Stan begins to clue in to the fact that Fifi is now working for Living
Kai, who admits that he is really Prince.
Prince – still wearing Kai's
face – explains that Stan is going to suffer for his sins. Fifi and Prince
advance on Stan with the intention of throwing him off the tower.
Hearing Stan's panicked screams,
Xev goes into a tuck and uses her cluster lizard skills to roll down the
tower wall. Stan knocks Fifi off the wall, and Xev deals with Prince.
Xev and Stan begin the long
climb back up the tower. Across the desert, Kai continues his trek toward
the city.
