Cade Foster has come to Prescott, Maine, to attend Rachel Cates' funeral. Cates belonged to a local community of psychics, and Cade has a hunch the Gua are somehow involved in her death.
Including the woman seen in the teaser, two men and two women also attend the funeral. As Cade approaches, one of the men argues with the others and storms off.
Pretending to be "Lawrence Stanley," an investigator for Mutual Insurance of Maine, Cade approaches the remaining man. His name is George Sedowsky, and he insists that Rachel's death was from natural causes.
When Cade points out that 24-year-olds don't die from brain hemorrhages, George walks away. Cade tries to continue the conversation, but is stopped by a large man with a German accent, who appears and then disappears out of nowhere.

I psi with my little eye
Cade next interviews Ellen, the woman from the teaser, who is considerably more pleasant. Over tea, she tells him about the members of her paranormal study group.
Molly Simon is a powerful telekinetic, while George can hypnotically project illusions like the large man who stopped Cade. Ellen is able to see visions connected to the things she touches.
Unlike George, Ellen is certain Rachel was murdered using a rare psychic technique known as "susperience" -- "suspect experience." A practitioner of this technique can invade people's dreams, killing them in the real world by killing them in the dreamscape.
Ellen doesn't know which of the group might have this ability, but she suspects Quinn, the man who fought with the others at the funeral. Quinn was the most gifted of the group -- until he was thrown out.
Vast mental powers used to win at pool
Cade finds Quinn hustling a pool player in "Bob's Tavern." The other guy's good, but Quinn uses telepathy to make him see multiple 8-balls and lose the game by sinking the cue ball.
When Quinn makes a wisecrack about winning, the burly pool player decides to teach him a lesson. Cade intervenes by flashing a (stolen or faked) badge, then sits Quinn down for a talk.
Taking most of Cade's questions from his mind, Quinn insists he had nothing to do with Rachel's murder and that he can't do susperience. He reveals to Cade that the group was government-funded, but won't give any details.
Quinn also tells Cade he should talk to Molly Simon -- he's never been able to figure her out. "Maybe she's your alien," he says.
Don't push the telekinetic
Molly says she knows nothing about Rachel's death, and that she wishes she'd never gotten involved with the program. Her temper flares when Cade presses her with more questions, and she slams him back in his seat, breaking his watch.
Later,
Eddie is impressed by the feat -- the watch was rated to withstand up to 140 pounds per square inch of pressure. When Cade tells him about the government program, he discovers that the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is behind the psychics.
Eddie and Cade quickly conclude that an alien has insinuated itself among the psychics, probably using psychic powers of its own to keep from being found out. Eddie's guess is that Quinn is the alien.
While going through files taken from the university, they find a document stating that Quinn was thrown out by George Sedowsky for unspecified "illegal activities." Cade abruptly goes to check George out.
Furnished rooms complete with lava lamps
When Cade lets himself into the room George is renting. it seems to be empty. An unfinished drink suggests George isn't far away, but when Cade tries to look in the closet, the knob seems to be burning hot, and there's a tarantula on his shoulder.
Cade isn't fazed this time, though, and George emerges from the closet. When he tries to ignore Cade and play a handheld video game, Cade takes the machine away from him.
George reluctantly talks about the group's involvement with SETI. They were using their powers to search space, and found evidence of alien transmissions. A fire destroyed the evidence, and George is convinced Quinn was responsible.
Cade finds Quinn on a pier. He denies setting the fire, and points out to to Cade -- whose true identity he now knows -- that "if I was an alien, you'd be dead already."
He refuses to use his powers to help find the alien, saying "It's not my fight." He also says he tried to tell the others about the Gua, but they wouldn't believe him.
When Cade speaks to Ellen, she confirms this, dismissing Quinn's "tabloid fantasies." She shows Cade the picture of her and Rachel, and tells him about the vision.
Cade asks her to attempt another vision, pointing out that "the killing's not going to stop with Rachel." She takes the picture, concentrates, and is surprised by what she sees.
Getting up, she turns out an outside light -- and there is Rachel, looking in the window.
Dead woman walking
Later, Cade and Ellen have gone to Rachel's house. They were shaken by the sight of Rachel, but think it could have been a hypnotic projection.
Ellen is uncomfortable in Rachel's room, but at Cade's request she goes around trying to get impressions. Something is blocking her, but she gets a recent image of Rachel arguing with somebody.
Searching the room, Cade finds a broken clock stopped at 10:23 -- about an hour before Rachel died.
Have a dream career in the CIA
Later, Cade parks his car outside Molly's house and checks in with Eddie. Cade thinks George is probably the killer, but Molly knows more than she's telling.
Meanwhile, Eddie's found information on susperience experiments conducted by the CIA. The experiments succeeded, but the CIA's agents died as often as the targets.
Thinking back to the quatrain, Cade theorizes that the "common blade" means that the killer is vulnerable in susperience. Eddie is skeptical, and believes taking on a psychic in a dreamscape is too dangerous.
Cade spots Molly leaving the house, and follows when she gets in her car and drives away.
He joins her in Bob's Tavern. She makes a desultory attempt to seduce him, but Cade tells her about the broken clock and asks what she was doing at Rachel's house.
As they talk, Quinn watches them from across the room.
Molly admits she was at Rachel's, and that they had argued. She says that Rachel pushed her, "and I pushed back."
The argument was over who had started the fire at the lab. Molly thought it was Quinn, while Rachel claimed she had evidence it was George.
Molly didn't see the evidence, and she denies being the killer. After all, she points out, if she'd killed Rachel she would be trying to avoid the dream killer by sitting here and drinking coffee to stay awake.
Cade spots Quinn, who leaves. Cade breaks off the conversation to follow him out.
I find your lack of faith disturbing
Outside, Cade calls Quinn a coward, but Quinn claims he doesn't like humanity enough to help. He suggests that deep down, Cade shares the same attitude.
Cade goes back to George's place to ask him more questions, but finds him dead in his bed. The police have been tipped off, too, and pull up outside. There's no time to escape.
When the police come into the room, Cade emerges from the bathroom and claims to be George. A policeman notices George's blood on the pillow, though, and they quickly find his body in the closet.
Mmmmm . . . doughnuts
As Cade is cuffed, he insists he didn't kill George. Meanwhile, the cops have found Cade's many IDs, including his recent Dylan Chase identity from "
The Apostles".
Suddenly, the cops decide they're hungry. They give Cade his wallet back, apologize and leave.
Back in the bar, Quinn smokes and smiles.
Cade leaves George's room and updates Eddie. He's guessed Quinn is coming around to their side.
The prime suspect is dead, and Eddie is stumped. However, Cade remembers another part of the quatrain -- "barricades protect spurious sleep" -- and goes to the cemetery to check a theory out.
When he digs out and opens Rachel's casket, he finds it empty.
Welcome to the Heather Langenkamp Fan Club
Cade returns to Eddie's trailer, worn out and desperate for coffee. He's sure that the Gua sent Rachel as a spy, then faked her death so she could disrupt the group of psychics.
He tells Eddie, "don't let me fall asleep," but it's too late. Cade is already asleep, and Eddie transforms into Rachel, who kicks Cade out of the trailer into a blasted dreamscape.
They fight, and while Cade is able to ward off a couple of blows, Rachel has the advantage. She creates a grave for Cade and then knocks him into it.
As Cade hangs on the edge of the grave, Quinn enters the dreamscape and begins a psychic battle with Rachel. They're evenly matched, but Cade is able to destroy Rachel by pulling her into the pit.
Cade wakes up to a concerned Eddie. Quinn is there too, and Cade tells him, "I was worried you were never going to show up."
"Are you kidding?" Quinn jokes. "I never miss a party."
I see aliens will be hunting you
The next morning, Cade says good-bye to the psychics, warning them that the Gua are likely to try again. They intend to be prepared, and Ellen tells Cade that he'd better get going -- the police are on the way.
As he passes police cars on his way out of town, Cade's thoughts turn to Quinn. Despite his initial reluctance, Quinn chose to join the war before it was too late.
"Our apathy will seal our fate," Cade muses, "our action will ensure our victory. All we have to do is make our choice."
