Cade Foster, meanwhile, is oblivious to all these machinations, instead concentrating on the task of quietly paddling a boat to an industrial trade zone on Cosgrove Island. He's looking for Harold Shanley, a fellow who claims, like Foster, to have escaped the Gua's experiments.

Shanley sent several emails to Eddie as he fled across the country, and his latest missive claims he's hiding "under the rising sun." It's a cryptic clue, but before Cade and Eddie can figure it out together, a burst of static cuts their cell phone conversation short.

In the lab, Lucas decides she likes the feel of her new body. Joshua tells her the husk has 60 percent more alien DNA than usual, giving her enhanced strength and senses. Like many Gua, Lucas is fascinated by the idea of human sex.

Outdoor survival

Cade sneaks around the island, finding nothing but a broken pair of glasses.

Eddie has apparently waited until now to run a careful trace on Shanley's email. The trace reveals that all of it did in fact come from Cosgrove Island.

It's a setup, just as "Crazy" Eddie feared. Upon learning that Cade's phone is being jammed, Eddie hurriedly packs a bag of equipment and rushes out to help. Unfortunately, he nearly forgets his hat, and when he goes back for it he does forget the equipment bag.

Back on the island, Cade avoids searchlights and continues to look for Shanley.

Shades of Jamie Sommers

In the Gua labs, Joshua gives Lucas an old shirt with Cade's scent on it. As she departs, she tries out the human custom of good-bye kisses.

Cade continues to sneak around while Lucas closes in on him with her enhanced hearing. He eventually finds Shanley in one of the storage containers, driven mad from the Gua's experiments.

Since Shanley knows nothing of any emails to Cade, it's almost certain that the aliens released him as bait.

As Cade figures this out, Shanley becomes convinced that Cade is one of "them." In the tense standoff that follows, Stanley puts a broken bottle to Cade's neck and Cade puts a gun to Shanley's head. The stalemate is broken when Lucas punches through the steel container wall and snaps Shanley's neck.

The alien bounty hunter then jumps into the container, whereupon Cade shoots her five times in the stomach. The impact throws her against the wall, but she's almost unharmed. Cade quite sensibly flees the scene.

Trapped!

Eddie arrives on the island looking for Cade and is badly startled when Cade finds him instead. He's about to show Cade the equipment he brought when he remembers that he left the bag behind.

After they bring each other up to date, Cade concludes that the Gua have a new experiment going -- if they wanted to kill him, he'd be dead already.

In the lab, Joshua repairs the minor damage Cade's bullets did to Lucas. Like many Gua before her, Lucas has decided that her first encounter with Cade has revealed his weakness -- his compassion for others led him to endanger himself trying to rescue Shanley.

Eddie and Cade return to the landing to find the boats gone. Eddie, ever the good paranoid, promptly panics.

But will she respect him in the morning?

In the lab, Joshua tracks Eddie's and Cade's movements. Meanwhile, Lucas tries to rekindle the romantic relationship she and Joshua nearly had in the past, but Joshua feels their duty to the Gua precludes any romance.

As Cade tries to keep Eddie from going to pieces, Lucas and Joshua review the goals of the experiment. She's been assigned to push Cade to his limits and evaluate his will and ability to fight. As the aliens scheme, Lucas sees the respect Joshua has for Cade, but is ultimately unsuccessful in her attempts to understand it.

Cade and Eddie continue to search for a way off the island. There's no connection to the mainland in current maps, but Cade tells Eddie to check older maps using his pocket computer. He finds markings for a bridge on a 30-year-old map.

In the lab, Joshua's assistant urges him to get some rest. He agrees, but can't resist asking if she'd break the protocols for the greater good of the Gua. She can barely imagine the idea.

Cade and Eddie arrive at the bridge and find it mostly sunk. They're followed by Lucas, who watches with a smile as they frantically jump into the water to escape.

Yep, we really can't escape

Later, Cade and Eddie dry off over a fire, still on the island. Cade's now certain this is another experiment, and he's tired of running. He's going to stand and fight.

Joshua chooses this moment to interrupt their conversation and tell the humans what's going on.

Lucas will take her evaluation of Cade back to the Guahead, and her report could determine whether the advanced phase of the alien invasion known as the "Second Wave" will launch now. Joshua wants Cade to make the best showing he can, and will help him escape if he does.

After Joshua leaves, Cade hotwires a car to use against Lucas.

Divide and conquer

Meanwhile, Lucas has figured out that Joshua visited Cade, which seems like treason to her. Joshua tries to explain that Cade's compassion is a strength that threatens the Gua.

Joshua is a patriot, but he doesn't want the Gua to launch a possibly doomed invasion that could cause massive casualties on both sides. His fears only make Lucas more determined to prove Cade's weakness.

Driving around, Cade and Eddie spot Lucas standing near a storage container. After a brief argument about who should get out of the car and save himself, Cade aims the car at Lucas and jumps out just in time. Lucas doesn't move as the car first plows into her, then knocks over a container and explodes.

Eddie and Cade enjoy a brief moment of triumph before Lucas walks out of the wreckage unhurt. She pursues the humans through the alleys, getting ahead of them at every turn and finally traps them in a large area walled by containers.

Showdown at the OK trade zone

Lucas watches from above as Eddie and Cade attempt to turn a truck into another weapon. Cade thinks Lucas's enhanced senses are the "double edge" of the "hacking blade" of Nostradamus' coded wisdom -- as such, they can be turned against her.

Joshua approaches Lucas in a last attempt to persuade her that the Gua invasion no longer has right behind it and she is losing the battle to Cade. Angered by this apparent show of disloyalty, she decides to kill Cade.

Leaping down the containers, she advances on Cade and Eddie, who attempt to blind and deafen her with the a truck headlight and the feedback scream of a cell phone and loudspeaker. It's not enough, however, and Lucas drives them away from the truck.

Cade has one last idea.

He directs Eddie to climb the wall of containers and turn a searchlight on Lucas. Although Eddie can't shine the searchlight directly on the angry alien, Cade has kept one of the truck's mirrors. Eddie points the searchlight at him, who bounces it off the mirror into Lucas's eyes.

Blinded, she staggers under a large cargo container suspended in the air. Cade stomps on the release control, which he has craftily left out in the middle of the yard for just such an eventuality. The container drops and crushes Lucas to death.

Eddie is jubilant. Joshua is shocked and dismayed. Cade watches Joshua's reaction.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled war

Cade and Eddie make their way back to the landing. As Joshua promised earlier, a boat is waiting.

As they leave, Cade muses on the effectiveness of fear, calling it the ultimate protective device. On Cosgrove Island, he has learned that by facing the things he fears, he can win any battle.
