In the corridor, she calls an accomplice on her global and tells them to meet her at the nearest portal

In the corridor, she calls an accomplice on her global and tells them to meet her at the nearest portal.

She shoots the Volunteer stationed at the portal. Her contact – another Volunteer – arrives and activates the portal for Mazar.

Guards find the downed Volunteer. They sound the alarm.

Da'an lies on ground. A wave of blue energy courses through his body.

Secrets and lies

Liam demands to see Da'an, but Sandoval refuses to allow him access. He tells Liam, "any activity other than uninterrupted rest places him in grave danger."

Sandoval orders Liam to find Da'an's assailant, Andrea Mazar, and to do everything he can to apprehend or terminate her as necessary.

Later, Mit'gai tells Sandoval that Da'an's injuries aren't serious enough to warrant his isolation. Sandoval asks him to keep everyone away for a short time.

Mit'gai demands to know why he should risk deceiving Zo'or on Da'an's behalf. Sandoval explains that it is a matter of "internal Taelon politics."

Mit'gai agrees to keep silent for the time being.

Who is she?

Renee reports that she could find no record of Andrea Mazar attending Harvard. This information supports Augur's own investigation.

Liam arrives and informs them that Mazar's trail stops at the Houston Portal Authority. He gives Augur a copy of her DNA code from the portal records.

Augur asks his AI to report the results of her search. She tells the group that Andrea Mazar doesn't exist.

Blast from the past

The woman calling herself Andrea Mazar hides out in Gladstone Hotel in Chicago. Her flashbacks continue.

She remembers walking toward a car. Her scarf falls to the ground, and her companion points it out to her.

He enters the vehicle. As she recovers the scarf, he turns the ignition key and the car explodes.

She is thrown to the ground, screaming the name "Philip!"

Zo'or gets involved

Zo'or summons Mit'gai and demands to know why Da'an has been isolated. He challenges Mit'gai's conclusions about Da'an's condition.

Mit'gai stands by his diagnosis. Zo'or asks for confirmation that, "Da'an is too infirm to engage in any degree of interrogation."

Mit'gai agrees with Zo'or's analysis.

False memories

Augur's AI informs Liam that according to the DNA code he provided, "The woman purported to be Andrea Mazar was in fact a woman by the name of Emma King."

Emma King was a chaos mathematician who was allegedly kidnapped and murdered three years before. Renee tells them that she knows Emma's husband, Philip.

The AI shares a final piece of information: "The FBI agent who conducted the hostage negotiations was Ronald Sandoval."

Liam, Augur and Renee conclude that the Taelons implanted false memories of her husband's death in King/Mazar's mind.

They can't fathom the Taelons' motive for doing so. They decide to investigate their only lead: Philip King.

Strange bedfellows

Sandoval reports his lack of progress in finding Mazar to Da'an. He warns Da'an that Mit'gai cannot be trusted to stand up to Zo'or and keep their secret.

Da'an tells Sandoval that it is a mistake to include Liam in the search. When he asks whether Sandoval believes Liam will kill Mazar, Sandoval tells him that Liam won't defy a direct order.

Sandoval argues that he is at risk if Zo'or discovers their plan. Da'an promises to take full responsibility, but Sandoval argues, "You would sell me out in a minute to save yourself!"

He accuses Da'an of being incapable of standing up to Zo'or. Given the risk of exposure, he warns, "So make no mistake Da'an: I will do whatever I deem necessary to save myself."

King or pawn?

Philip King visits Renee at her office. She offers him a position with Doors International, but he declines, claiming he is happy running his own business.

She offers her condolences for his wife's death and he shares his feelings of loss with her.

At the Flat Planet, Liam and Augur compare notes. Augur's search of Philip King's records indicates that he runs a legitimate operation.

His company utilizes Taelon technology, but King doesn't fit the profile of a Taelon collaborator. Liam suggests that the Taelons implanted false memories in both Philip and his wife.

Philip King calls and invites Renee to dinner. She agrees.

Liam warns her to be careful, but Renee insists she can take care of herself.

Going out with a bang

Liam gets a call. Joan Price – the Volunteer who helped Mazar escape – reports a DNA match for Mazar in Chicago. The search team is converging on the Gladstone Hotel.

Liam arrives ahead of the team. Mazar is in her room working with the artifact.

Liam picks the lock and enters the room. As he and Mazar face each other with guns drawn, Liam assures her he is there to help.

The search team arrives. Liam sends Mazar out the rear fire escape with the artifact while he downloads the files from her computer to Augur's.

Sandoval detects the transmission. He orders a Volunteer to destroy the room.

Liam finishes downloading. He gets out of the room just ahead of the rocket the Volunteers fire at the building.

Sifting through the rubble

A Volunteer reports that there is no trace of either Mazar or the stolen artifact in debris in the room. Sandoval orders him to seal off the city and commence a block-by-block search.

The data Liam downloaded from Mazar's contains an ancient Taelon text, presumably authored by Ma'el. Mazar was using her knowledge of chaos theory to break the encryption.

Liam tells Augur that Mazar will need a new, incredibly powerful computer to finish her work. He tells Augur to pinpoint any suitable hardware shipments inside Sandoval's search perimeter.

Dance of deception

Renee has dinner with Philip King. He tells her this is the first date he has been on since his wife died.

When Renee asks how King feels about the Taelons, he insists the aliens are just another high tech supplier. As for Resistance sympathies, King claims he does not align himself with any political group.

They curtail their business discussion and head out on the dance floor. After several numbers, King kisses Renee.

She breaks the kiss, apologizes, and asks to leave.

Confrontation

Zo'or finds Da'an in the infirmary. He accuses Da'an of conspiring with Mit'gai to deceive him.

He demands to know why Andrea Mazar attacked Da'an. Da’an tells Zo'or he has no explanation.

Frustrated, Zo'or warns Da’an, "At this moment, I cannot prove your treachery, but I will."

A question of loyalty, or something more?

Liam arrives at Renee's office. He accuses Renee of revealing her Resistance ties to King, and she angrily assures him she didn't reveal anything.

Liam asks whether King is trying to make contact with the Resistance. Renee tells Liam she needs to see King one more time to be certain where his sympathies lie.

Liam suggests that Renee wants to see King again for more personal reasons. He forbids her from making contact with him again.

Renee asks whether he's afraid she'll endanger the Resistance. Liam reminds her that King's wife is alive, and claims he is worried about Renee's feelings.

Augur calls, cutting short their argument with the news that he has located a likely computer. Liam goes to investigate.

In the nick of time

Mazar works with the artifact. Outside, a Volunteer reports that Mazar's apprehension is imminent.

A portable portal receiver activates in the room where Mazar is working. Liam portals in and tells Mazar they have to leave.

The Volunteers enter the building.

Mazar decides to trust Liam. She gathers the artifact.

They head for the portal under fire from the Volunteers. Sandoval enters the room seconds too late to prevent their escape.

The truth shall make you free

At Renee's office, Liam tells Mazar that it is vital that humanity controls the information contained in the artifact. Mazar isn't ready to trust them.

Liam tells her that her real name is Emma King. Renee explains that the Companions staged her death and implanted false memories – and that Philip is still alive.

On a deadline

Joan Price reports to Zo'or.

Emma explains that the artifact contains extensive research documents that Ma'el sent to the Taelon homeworld centuries ago. The device is encoded to require both Taelons and humans to decipher.

Renee refuses to share the data with the Companions. Emma explains that the artifact began degrading when she took it off the mothership.

They must access the data as soon as possible, lest it be lost forever.

Zo'or asks about Price's friendship with Mazar. He asks whether Price knows anything about her escape.

When Price pleads ignorance, Zo'or takes control of her implant, telling her, "It is now time for you to tell me everything you know."

The only chance

Liam tells them they need to make a deal with Da'an. Emma argues that Da'an was responsible for her abduction.

Zo'or calls Liam. Liam reports that he located Andrea Mazar, and terminated her per Sandoval's order.

He also tells Zo'or he recovered the relic. After breaking contact, he tells Emma and Renee Zo'or "is the only chance we've got."

Even stranger bedfellows

Aboard the mothership, Liam brings Zo'or the relic. Zo'or dismisses Liam, then immediately summons him back, explaining, "I require your aid."

Zo'or explains, "Ma'el's perverse morality drove him to secure his message so that a member of both our species is required to activate it." He tells Liam to help him access the data.

As the device activates, Zo'or tells Liam that Ma'el produced a primer on the genetic manipulation of humans. Liam notes that humans are the genetic link between the Taelons and the Jaridians.

Zo'or explains that once open, the information is only accessible by the two of them.

"Well," Liam says, "it looks like you and I will be working together for a while."

Divided loyalties

Zo'or accuses Da'an of trying to destroy him. Da'an insists, "My actions were proper, and despite the outcome, I would act in exactly the same manner if given the chance again."

Da'an leaves, and Zo'or turns his attention to Sandoval. He tells the agent, "I grant you one hour to organize your affairs before your execution."

Sandoval argues that he is compelled to serve all Taelons. Zo'or accuses him of betrayal, but Sandoval reminds Zo'or that he was never given a direct order with respect to the relic.

Zo'or relents. He issues a new order, "From this point on Agent Sandoval, you will place my interests above all else, regardless of the involvement of other Taelons."

Happy endings

Liam tells Augur and Renee that the Resistance will get Ma'el's data at the same time Zo'or does.

Philip King arrives for a reunion with his wife. A Resistance agent is on hand to take them into hiding.

Liam, Renee and Augur watch them leave.
