QUOTABLE MOMENTS

Liam dreams about the attack on Briggs, muttering in synch with the victim as he stumbles down the hall.

The energy cloud descends on Briggs. It forms a flaming circle around Briggs' body, burning him.

Liam wakes up and goes to visit the bank where Briggs worked. He introduces himself to a detective on the scene. He tells the detective that he saw the attack in a dream.

The detective is understandably skeptical. Liam asks whether they found Briggs' ring yet.

He describes it -- "solid gold; the design was a circle with a dot in the middle." -- and tells the detective where to find it.

Another episode, another plot

Aboard the mothership, Zo'or complains about Briggs to Sandoval and demands that the dead agent be replaced.

This has apparently happened before. Sandoval reminds Zo'or of the suicides of Ku'don and Rho-ha, both of whom were in charge of projects for Zo'or when they "voluntarily left this plane of existence to enter the next level."

Zo'or orders Sandoval to take over the case, then hears a spectral voice that leaves him distracted for a long moment.

After Sandoval leaves, the bridge lights flicker. A ghostly voice moans, "Exile!"

Zo'or tells the spirit to depart.

Division of labor

Liam tells Renee about his dream. She shows him Doors' file on Briggs, a financial wunderkind who saved his bank from financial ruin.

Since they can't understand why Liam dreamt of the death of a banker he never met, they decide to split up and investigate.

Liam goes first, breaking into Briggs' townhouse. The walls and ceiling of the living room are covered with the same insignia seen on Briggs' ring -- apparently burned in.

As if to underscore this discovery, a column of blue energy descends from ceiling to floor, scorching a hole in the floor and etching the symbol into a box in the basement.

The basement door opens of its own accord. Liam goes down the stairs.

The basement walls are also covered with the symbol. Liam finds the box, and opens it to discover a Taelon datalog.

A burst of energy appears in the corner of the room. A figure stands in the energy field with its arms outstretches, says "Exile!" and disappears.

One step ahead

Our hero has no time to contemplate this mystery as an armed team enters the living room. The leader throws a shock gas grenade, then orders his men to locate the intruder.

Liam subdues a guard and steals the man's gas mask, weapons and equipment. Thus disguised, he leaves the townhouse with the rest of the team, only to run off when they turn a corner.

The leader, apparently not noticing a man from his squad is missing, calls in to base to tell Sandoval about the condition of Briggs' apartment. They exchange ominous words about the possibility the banker didn't follow orders.

More things in heaven and Earth

Liam shows Augur and Renee the datalog he found in the townhouse.

He tells them about seeing the apparition, whom he recognized as Ku'don, a senior member of the Synod who recently willed himself to the next plane of existence.

Renee is skeptical of Liam's claim that a dead Taelon showed him where to find the datalog. He reminds her that we don't fully understand the Taelons' abilities.

Renee undercover

Renee visits the New World Commonwealth Bank under the cover of arranging a loan for Doors Industries. She meets with Samuel Priest, offering her condolences about Briggs' death.

Fisk, the chief of security -- and the leader of the team at Briggs' townhouse -- enters and informs Priest that his security sweep indicated a radio source in the office.

Renee tells them that she had her global on standby. She takes it out of her briefcase and deactivates it, along with the recording device hidden in the briefcase's handle.

On the way out, Renee admires a manuscript on display that prominently features the symbol found on Briggs' ring.

Priest tells her that they use it as the Bank's corporate signature. In the middle ages, the circle and dot was the alchemical symbol for gold.

Who's pulling the strings?

After Renee leaves, Sandoval enters the room. He tells Priest that it is dangerous for the bank to deal with Doors -- the company's co-ventures project is too close a connection with the Taelons.

Priest tries to argue, but as Sandoval threatens, "We raised your bank from the ashes. We can burn it to the ground just as fast."

Renee shows Augur the secret recording she made in Priest's office. They analyze his voiceprint and determine that Priest was lying, and also afraid.

Liam returns to Briggs' apartment and meets with the detective in charge again. The detective tells Liam that the circles on the walls weren't burnt there, "not with any heat source or chemical we know about."

Showing Liam the autopsy report, he says he believes he has enough evidence to classify Briggs' death a homicide. The man was burned to death from the inside.

Restless spirits

Zo'or examines a data log. The lights on the bridge flicker again and an energy cloud appears.

Ku'don appears to say "Exile!" Then a hole opens in the virtual glass wall of the bridge. The air rushes out, threatening to suck Zo'or into space.

The hole repairs itself. Sandoval rushes to Zo'or's side, telling the Taelon that all the fail-safe systems of the bridge were deactivated.

Zo'or refuses to discuss his brush with death. He orders Sandoval to purge the ship's log of any record of the incident.

Vengeance from beyond the grave?

Augur confirms that Briggs was killed by Taelon radiation. The police were unable to detect the radiation because the Companions keep the information classified.

Liam concludes that the only Taelon near Briggs was Ku'don. Renee again refuses to believe in alien ghosts, but Augur insists that they don't know how energy-based life forms transmigrate.

Da'an tells Liam that Ku'don was involved in a special project for Zo'or and has ominously "not rejoined us." He explains that the Companion's soul has been banished to a state of purgatory.

Liam tells Da'an that the apparition wants him involved. He shows Da'an the datalog.

The Taelon tells Liam that the entries correspond to amounts of money. When Liam points out that the Companions don't use money, Da'an reminds him, "Even Taelons did so once."

Renee undercover part II

Renee disguises herself as "Renee Hale," a vampishly ditzy temp assigned to a financial services company.

She calls Augur from her desk and tells him that she is working on the fifth floor of the New World Commonwealth Bank. Augur uses this information to hack into the building's phone system and access the floor plan.

Ku'don's spirit visits Liam again. The ghost burns the circle and dot symbol into Liam's palm, ordering the man to "Destroy them!"

Zo'or vs. Da'an round infinity

Zo'or tells Da'an that the "accident" on the bridge was an assassination attempt by Ku'don's spirit. He explains that Ku'don was in charge of the profits from the co-venture projects.

Though Da'an argues that Zo'or's quest for wealth is degenerate, Zo'or insists that he seeks capital as a means of controlling humanity. He hopes to ensure Taelon survival "by adopting the base values of a species like the humans."

He asks Da'an to perform ha'ja'thra (banishment) for Ku'don. Da'an refuses, but Zo'or tells him that he knows Da'an is not really willing to risk blaspheming the Commonality by denying his obligation to a fellow Taelon.

Sneakers

Liam meets Renee for lunch in the park to show her the mark on his hand.

He tells Renee that they have to break into the bank. She warns him that Augur hasn't cracked the entire security system yet.

Liam insists that they need to know how Ku'don is involved with the bank. Renee tells him that she can find no record of the Taelons taking profit from their co-ventures, "but if they wanted to, they could wind up owning the whole planet."

Extraterrestrial exorcism

Da'an conducts the ha'ja'thra rite. He accuses Ku'don of profaning the Taelons' noblest ideals.

He summons Ku'don. The spirit appears and proclaims his innocence.

Da'an is forced to carry out the will of the Commonality. He banishes Ku'don into eternal exile.

Before disappearing, Ku'don announces, "I will await you there, Zo'or."

Zo'or views the banishment as an endorsement by the Commonality. Da'an argues that it is instead, "a paralysis to oppose you."

Renee Palmer, Super Spy

Renee asks her supervisor to let her work overtime. He agrees.

She excuses herself to take a bathroom break, entering the stairwell and taking the stairs down to the New World Commonwealth Bank level.

Augur guides her to a service shaft in the wall. She cuts a hole into the shaft, removes a large weapon from her tote bag and fires it into the shaft.

The projectile exits through an exhaust vent and embeds itself in a desk, unfolding into a portable ID portal receiver.

Renee returns to work.

Caught in the act!

Augur tells Liam that he has deactivated the bank's security system. He warns Liam to be careful, since they may have a stealth system Augur is unaware of.

Liam enters Augur's portal setup and materializes in the bank and, guided by Augur, heads to the vault, where he uses a recording of Priest's voice to bypass the gate into the vault area.

Fisk leads an armed team through the bank in pursuit of the intruder, intercepting Liam just as he prepares to open the vault door with a fusion knife grenade.

Divine intervention?

Liam puts his hands on his head but says he cannot disarm the fusion knife -- the countdown is locked.

Suddenly, the vault door begins opening of its own accord. Liam hears the voice of Ku'don.

Liam throws the grenade at Fisk's team and sprints into the vault. Fisk follows before the grenade explodes, closing the vault door behind him.

Moving quickly, Liam accesses a computer in the vault's sub-basement and sends Briggs' accounts to Augur.

Fisk, meanwhile, has donned his gas mask. He now throws a shock gas grenade down the stairs.

When Fisk reaches the bottom to the stairs, Liam tackles him. They struggle. Liam gets the upper hand and steals Fisk's mask. Fisk succumbs to the gas.

Liam runs for the vault door, only to find it locked.

Ku'don appears. He holds his hand out to Liam and tells him, "You have cleansed the impurity. I am free. Eternally free."

The ghostly alien then heals the mark on Liam's palm and burns a hole through the vault door, through which Liam escapes.

Wrap up

Sandoval reports to Zo’or that the bank is going out of business and that Fisk is dead. He has planted a confession indicating that Fisk killed Briggs.

Da'an tells Zo'or that his actions defile the Commonality. Zo'or argues that he is a savior, threatening Da'an with exile if he interferes with Zo'or's plans.

Liam tells Augur and Renee that Ku'don is at peace.

Augur shows them the records he downloaded. The bank was holding $3 trillion in gold, presumably for the Taelons.

Renee notes that the alchemical symbol for gold is the same as the Taelon symbol for wealth. She suggests that the lust for money is universal.

Suddenly, they notice that the gold is being transferred out of the account, leaving a zero balance.

Aboard the mothership, Zo'or addresses Ku'don's spirit. "You understand that one day I will possess this species. All I must do is buy them."

Zo'or stares into a room full of gold bullion.
