| AI: Maybe you should go undercover, hon.Augur: I live underground. How much more undercover can I get? Not to mention that I'd probably have to buy some new clothes from ... The Gap. I mean, can you imagine me in a work shirt and jeans? |
Zo'or: There will always be questions, Reverend Murray. What is important is that those questions never lead any to firm conclusions. |
Augur: Look, I don't ask you about your personal life. Don't ask me about mine.
Renee: I have no personal life. |

WHAT HAPPENED
Liam and Renee are out for a walk. They meet Devon, a friend of Liam's and a member of the Church of the Companions.
Liam asks after Devon's girlfriend, Gina. He tells them that she is having dinner back at the Church's mission.
In fact, a pair of Volunteers are escorting Gina into a portal. Reverend Murray, the founder of the Church -- as seen in the first season episode "Miracle" -- tells Gina that she is on the path of ultimate salvation.
The portal activates. Gina and her Volunteer escort disappear. (more

ANALYSIS
"The Fields" offers a compelling inversion of the central Christian mystery.
In Christianity, the faithful are spiritually sustained by the real -- if you accept transubstantiation -- or representational flesh of God incarnate. God feeds the human soul.
In this episode, the Gods -- for such is the Church's interpretation of the Taelons -- subsist on food grown from the body of the faithful. Humans feed the Gods' bodies.
Blind evil
Renee and Liam had far too easy a time infiltrating the Church of the Taelons.
Renee is not only an attractive woman, she's a very public figure.
Even if Church personnel are above the worldly concerns of the former, it's hard to believe they are ignorant of the latter.
Renee's professional persona as the director of the Taelon-Human joint venture would no doubt make her recognizable to any church official or convert who ever read a newspaper or watches a television report.
More damning still is Liam's status as a Companion Protector. It stands to reason that a high-ranking official like Samuel would know something of the Taelons' human agents.
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
Will Liam and Renee suffer any withdrawal symptoms after going off their manna diet?
Will Liam learn about the new fields on the moon?
Will the Taelons' adaptation to Earth require a more open, cooperative relationship between Companions and humans?
