Babylon 5 - ‘Deathwalker’

Sheridan is working so hard he can’t see the love around him. On the other hand, Lord Refa sees the love and knows he’s about to be killed by a bunch of angry Narns.

(Originally aired October 14, 1996)

Written by J. Michael Straczynski
Directed by David J. Eagle

What Do Words Mean?
DELENN: I looked up the word "cranky". It said "grouchy". I looked up "grouchy". It said "crotchety". No wonder you have such an eccentric culture: none of your words have their own meanings. You have to look up one word to understand another. It never ends.

BROTHER THEO: He seems to think that if he does not say my name, I will not know he's referring to me. I can only assume someone has been spraypainting the word "idiot" on my back again.

WATCH OUT FOR

* A countdown started. This episode sees three countdown times, approaching day by day. These Z-Minus times take us right up to the season finale and a trip to Z’ha’dum.

* Bad logic. In his holographic speech, Londo claims that Lord Refa must die because he killed his beloved dancer Adira Tyree, but what Londo doesn't know is that it was actually Morden who arranged her death.

ANALYSIS

As ever, Londo and G’Kar provide us with a study in contrasts as they act at the Narn Homeworld.

Londo acts purely out of self-interest. Since House Refa threatens his house, he strikes back -- to maintain his own status and out of revenge for arranging the death of Adira.

Committed to this course of action, Londo coerces the person who trusts him most, Vir, to take a message to G’Kar. He knows the message will be intercepted, but this sets the groundwork to trap Refa.

On the other hand, G’Kar acts selflessly, going to Narn to help Na'Toth despite Garibaldi’s warning about what will happen if he leaves the station's safety.

Even though we're never shown how G'Kar learns Londo's plan, we know that it worked. We do see the Narn bearing Londo’s holographic projector and the knowledge that Refa was responsible for the deaths of so many his people.

One man acts for himself. Another acts for his people. Soon enough, the roles will mutate again -- Londo will turn his attention to his race's welfare and G’Kar will repeat his charity off-station, only to be caught by the Centauri.

A kiss before Z’ha’dum

With the White Star fleet before them, Delenn and Sheridan kiss.

Reverend Dexter is not only able to see that Delenn loves Sheridan, he's sensible enough to tell him about it.

Sheridan has been, in Ivanova’s words, "cranky." The captain’s persistent, showing us his driven side. He uses work to avoid other work. He has no life outside his work.

No life except Delenn.

JMS gives Delenn and Sheridan a moment of peace here -- a passionate kiss -- before each must make momentous decisions. Z’ha’dum is only ten days away.
