Number One, Status Report?
SHERIDAN: Commander, everything in order?

IVANOVA: Remarkably so. It's beginning to worry me.

SHERIDAN: And do you always worry when things are going well?

IVANOVA: Well I don't have time to worry about them when they're not.

VIR: You know, on rare occasions I am proud to be your attache.

WATCH OUT FOR

* A reference before. Sheridan’s view of the Icarus was initially meant to lead viewers toward the episode "In the Shadow of Z’ha’dum", but the effects needed for this episode took longer than expected, moving the episodes out of sequence.

* Another temporary Sheridan. The uncredited actor who briefly plays David Sheridan here does not return to the role later in the series. Instead, Rance Howard plays John’s father in "Severed Dreams", "Interludes and Examinations" and "Rising Star."

ANALYSIS

The main plot of this episode plays something like a ghost story.

Our intrepid hero, John Sheridan, boasts that he was always a brave sort. As he tells Garibaldi, the unknown has a special appeal -- when it seems that there’s a mystery somewhere in the station, Sheridan goes out after it. Alone. He’s brave like that. Maybe a bit impulsive, too.

However, once Sheridan wakes up to find a monster in his bedroom, his bravery is tested. He sees ghostly images of his own parents, relives the explosion of the Icarus, the ship that killed his wife.

Soon, everyone in C&C is watching the captain chasing things that aren't there.

But something is out there, and Sheridan is right to try to help it.

Yes, he’s an impulsive fool who would have gotten himself killed if Garibaldi wasn't there to save his Starfury from slipping into the vortex. But he shows compassion and a willingness to brave the unknown, even to save an alien that’s been giving him strange visions.

The episode showcases Sheridan’s drive to find answers, his need to act, and his willingness to go it alone if need be. All are traits we’ll see as the wars around the station heat up.
