Brits Name Star Wars Best Film of Millennium

It seems the British have spacy taste in movies. They've chosen Star Wars: A New Hope, the original episode released in 1977, as the best film of the millennium, according to a poll conducted by Rupert Murdoch's Sky Premier satellite movie channel.

Of the 162,000 people who participated, more than one third voted for Star Wars. The seminal space epic beat out Titanic, Gone With the Wind, Casablanca and It's a Wonderful Life, which rounded out the top five.

In addition to Star Wars, the Brits propelled 11 other space fiction films into the top 100. They were:

ET: The Extraterrestrial (11th)

Independence Day (24th)

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (27th)

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (29th)

2001: A Space Odyssey (34th)

Aliens (38th)

Men in Black (52nd)

Alien (59th)

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (60th)

Armageddon (62nd)

The Fifth Element (80th)

[In case you're wondering why the latest episode, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, didn't make the list, it won't be released in the U.K. until July 17.]
