The man who almost single-handedly brought the alien abduction mythos to public attention, Strieber is the best-selling writer of such books as Majestic and Transformation.
Previously best known as a horror novelist, Strieber broke out of the genre in 1987 with his startling Communion, a first-person and allegedly nonfiction account of his experiences at the hands of the big-eyed, noseless entities now familiar in the literature as the "Gray aliens." After a few follow-up books in a similar vein, he dropped out of sight for several years, citing an unwillingness to write more until the entities gave him something new to say.
He returned in 1996 with Breakthrough after recovering deeper memories of being experimented on by mysterious forces. In particular, he says unknown agencies planted a metallic object behind his left ear in 1994. This object occasionally produces a "high, complicated tone -- like a data transfer" and aches. Moreover, it has defied at least one attempt to remove it surgically by reorienting itself in his head, going "on the run" in the words of his surgeon.

He is also a "regular guest host" of Art Bell's popular UFO radio program, "Dreamland". His upcoming book The Coming Global Superstorm (formerly known as Beyond the Edge), was co-written with Bell and deals with the upcoming "earth changes" that the two men believe may soon overwhelm the world. The book will be available in January.
Strieber was honored at the 36th
National UFO Conference as "UFOlogist of the Year" for his work in bringing the UFO enigma to a wider audience. In his acceptance speech, he berated the mainstream media for their studied policy of "silence," "denial" and "rejection" of UFO experiences.
A native Texan, he recently returned with wife Anne to San Antonio after years spent in "a little cabin in the woods" in upstate New York. He warns his fans that, as he does not post to newsgroups, any Internet communication purporting to be from him is likely to be a forgery.
