Conspiracy/UFOlogy drama. In their big screen debut, Scully and Mulder travel to the ends of the earth, from the deserts of Texas to the icy plains of Antarctica, out to stop the alien menace and menaced by FEMA and bees every step of the way.

2:15 PM Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Showtime)

Alien contact drama. Musical aliens get up close and personal with Francois Truffaut (as a thinly-disguised Jacques Vallee), Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, J. Allen Hynek and other Earth people, while "tinkerbell" brings up the rear. A classic example of Steven Spielberg's sensibilities circa 1977.

3:00 PM Dark Skies (SciFi) - We Shall Overcome
Conspiracy/UFOlogy drama. J. Edgar Hoover threatens to break with MJ-12 while John and Kim deal with alien involvement in the murders of Mississippi civil rights activists.

3:30 PM Contact (HBO)

Alien contact drama. Aliens help an aloof astronomer (Jodie Foster) work through her unresolved father-daughter issues, while a wide-eyed Matthew McConaughey looks on in religious bewilderment. Also featuring James Woods, John Hurt and Tom Skerritt.

3:15 AM Five Million Years to Earth (TNT)

Unusually thorough investigation of the effects of UFO visitation. Better known under its British title, "Quatermass and the Pit," film deals with the apocalyptic ramifications of a Martian spaceship being dug up under London. Harrowing climax, stolid plotting.

1:00 PM The Day the Earth Stood Still (AMC)

Groundbreaking UFO film directed by believers. Michael Rennie turns in a pensive performance as "Klaatu," the alien who came a long way to warn the people of Earth to change their warlike ways. All-time classic of the genre also features a Bernard Herrmann score and Gort the giant robot, and watch for behind-the-scenes interviews in upcoming documentary, "Celebrity Close Encounters."

6:00 PM Roswell (WB) - Series Premiere

UFOlogy drama. A high school girl finds out her classmates are stranger than she had previously suspected after a random diner shooting forces three youthful aliens to reveal themselves

7:00 PM Dark Skies (SciFi) - The Awakening

Conspiracy/UFOlogy drama. The year is 1961. Two young Washington go-getters uncover evidence of sinister collusion between aliens and the government organization called Majestic-12. (first part of two)

9:00 PM Art Bell: Dreamland (radio, syndicated)

Radio talk. Regular guest host Whitley Strieber talks to Sam Sherman about audio evidence of a UFO air chase at Edwards Air Force Base. Sherman also has video, apparently.

10:00 PM The Visitor (SciFi) - Reunion

Conspiracy drama. The Visitor finds his wife (the lovely Barbara Bain) dying in a hospital while FBI agents watch the exits.
