Rick Berman recently told a Los Angeles news station that the Romulans will play their first major role in the 10th Star Trek film, to be released in 2002.

"I can tell you nothing about the surprises," Berman told UPN 13 in L.A. "I can tell you - I wasn't planning to do this, but I will - that we will be meeting the Romulans in this movie. I will say no more."

Noted android Brent Spiner, who helped develop the story with John Logan (Gladiator) has also signed on to act in the still untitled project. The Trek head honchos haven't decided whether it will be the last "Next Generation" film.

While no one's chosen a director, word on the convention circuit says that Jonathan Frakes will three-peat, although LeVar Burton has told the official Star Trek magazine he feels ready to tackle a feature, having directed several Trek television episodes.

As for the story, Berman said Logan will remind Trek fans just how cold it is in space.

"We've got, in my mind, the greatest Star Trek villain since Khan," he said, although he didn't say the villain would be the Romulan connection. "John was intent on creating a wonderful villain, and we've got a doozy."

Berman added that Logan has turned out to be quite the Trekker.

"John, I think, knows far more about Star Trek than I do," he said. "He has every episode on tape."

Although he didn't say anything more about the storyline, he did deny the rumor that Data would die in this one. He did promise, though, "There are some very interesting surprises regarding Data in this film . . . but you're going to have to wait to see the movie."
