Although official Lucasfilm
sources remain tight-lipped, an Australian newspaper is reporting that
the next installment of the Star Wars saga will be known as The
Rise of the Empire.
The Australian, a
newspaper published by News Corp., which also owns Star Wars distributor
20th Century Fox and the production facilities in which the prequel is
filming, broke the story Thursday.
However, Lucasfilm spokeswoman
Jeanne Cole told online Star Wars haven TheForce.net that the studio is
still calling simply the film "Episode II," implying that "Rise of the
Empire" may not actually be the official release title when the film premieres
in 2002, 25 years after the first -- and in the series' internal chronological
order, the fourth -- film, the original Star Wars.

The newspaper also noted
that George Lucas and company are nearing the end of their initial run
of filming in Sydney's
Fox Studios and should head to locations in Italy and Tunisia soon.
While the ominous implications
of the title Rise of the Empire within the Star Wars mythology
are obvious, fans know the Old Republic was doomed anyway.
