British Film Group Honors Kubrick

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA LA) announced Monday that it will rename its annual Britannia Award for Excellence in Film for director and writer Stanley Kubrick.

Kubrick will also receive the award--now called the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award For Excellence in Film--posthumously at a ceremony in Beverly Hills on Sept. 14.

BAFTA, whose members include actors, directors, producers and writers, is a non-profit organization that promotes work among those associated with the British film and television industry. Kubrick lived in Hertfordshire, England, for many years, and died there in March.

Among his many films, Kubrick directed and co-wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey. 2001, released in 1968, was Kubrick's highest grossing film, pending the results of his latest movie, Eyes Wide Shut. Kubrick was nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay for the film.
