Mob Show Hurts X-Files' Emmy Chances

The Emmy nominations are out, and The Sopranos has rubbed The X-Files out of the Outstanding Drama Series category.

The X-Files has been nominated in that category every year since 1995. For most of those years, it has gone up against the same shows--ER, Law & Order and NYPD Blue, with The Practice joining the pack after knocking Chicago Hope out of the running last year.

The show was also shut out of several other categories for which it has been nominated in the past, including Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Nevertheless, with eight nominations, The X-Files still received the most of any space-related show. Most notably, Gillian Anderson was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for the fourth year in a row.

Following close behind The X-Files in terms of the number of nominations was 3rd Rock From the Sun, which garnered seven nods, including one for John Lithgow as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

For its last season, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine received four nominations, bringing its total to 32 for the series. Deep Space Nine has won four Emmys. By contrast, Star Trek: The Next Generation was nominated 58 times in its seven year run, winning 18 of those Emmys.

Space related shows swept the Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series, with three nominations for Star Trek: Voyager, one for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and one for Total Recall 2070.

All told, space-related shows received 26 nominations. The Sopranos alone received 16.

The nominations, announced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, cover the period from June 1, 1998 to May 31, 1999.

The awards presentation will be broadcast on Sunday, September 12 on the Fox Network.
