Earth: Final Conflict
The latest television series to bear the Roddenberry banner, Earth: Final Conflict focuses on the struggle between two cultures -- one human, the other alien -- to learn to cooperate before they destroy each other.
Now in its third season, the show was based on an original series treatment by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and now numbers his widow, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, as an executive producer.
EFC's "Roddenberry connection" should be readily apparent to long-time fans of science fiction television. Like Star Trek before it, EFC focuses on the infinite number of ways that diverse people and species can interact to one another's benefit. There are no true villains, as conflict emerges only when people act out of misunderstanding or fear, whether they happen to be members of the Taelon Synod or the pro-human Resistance.
Unlike most incarnations of Star Trek, however, EFC writers have worked to provide the program with an overreaching dramatic arc that promises to build from the first episodes into the fourth or even fifth season.
Another EFC producer is David Kirschner, whose interests in puppetry and L. Frank Baum's Oz books inform the show's elegant sense of design. The look and feel of the Taelons' advanced biological technology has become one of EFC's hallmarks, winning praise from fans and artists alike.
