A smattering of the unique lingo used by fen at a con before they gafiate and go mundane.

concom - The committee that puts together a con.

DUFF - Down Under Fan Fund. Everyone pitches in a little money and then one person is elected to get a free ticket to the Worldcon from overseas. Used primarily for moving fen between North America and Australia. (related terms: Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund (TAFF), which sends fans between North America and Europe, and Get-Up-And-Over Fan Fund (GUFF), which allows travel to and from Europe and Australia)

fen - more than one fan

FIAWOL and FIJAGH – The two polar extremes of one’s belief in the fannish lifestyle. Stands for Fandom is a Way of Life and Fandom is Just a Goddamn Hobby.

filk – (noun) a song, often a parody of a popular tune, with science-fiction-relevant lyrics. (verb) to write or sing filksongs -- "filkers" are those who do so.

GAFIA - Getting Away From It All. To gafiate is to quit fandom or to at least temporarily leave a convention to see actual sky.

GoH - Guest of Honor. The featured guest at the convention.

mundane - A non-fan. At a con, this is a derisive term.

neofan - Someone new to fandom.

SMOF - Secret Master of Fandom. People who claim to be smoffs usually aren’t. Smoffs are off running the con, and like old-style Chicago-city politics, do all their work behind the scenes. You can watch people smoffing (discussing running cons instead of science fiction itself) at any con.
