Ben Browder portrays Commander John Crichton, a 20th-Century American astronaut caught in a space accident that hurls him across many galaxies to the adventure of a lifetime, in the television series Farscape.
Crichton was born in North Carolina about 30 years ago. His father, Jack, was also an astronaut, a former test pilot who was in line to take the first step onto the moon, but was passed over in favor of Neil Armstrong. As a result, Jack insisted that his son get the scientific training that would help him compete as the first second-generation astronaut in the newly international space program -- even though it meant suppressing the boy's natural interest in sports and physical activity.
After high school, Crichton went on to MIT and received a doctorate in theoretical sciences, then jumped at the chance to train with NASA. He became a popular mission specialist and served on several shuttle missions until he stepped into a one-man capsule and ended up at the far end of the universe.
Born in Memphis, TN, and raised in Charlotte, NC, Browder is a graduate of Furman University in Greenville, SC. He received his acting training at Central School of Speech and Drama in London. His family owns and operates a NASCAR Busch series race car.
