Paw Print
on Eros
When scientists operating
the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft spotted this obvious and ominous feature on
asteroid Eros, there was little to do but dub it "The Paw."
As is often the case with
mysterious space photos, however, The Paw is actually a crater some 3.3 miles
(5.3 kilometers) across. So The Paw got the official name of Psyche
(classically the human representation of the soul, loved by Cupid) -- an
appropriate crater name for a space rock named Eros.
