The Mars Face, Eros

Paw Print on Eros

When scientists operating the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft spotted this obvious and ominous feature on asteroid Eros, there was little to do but dub it "The Paw."

As is often the case with mysterious space photos, however, The Paw is actually a crater some 3.3 miles (5.3 kilometers) across. So The Paw got the official name of Psyche (classically the human representation of the soul, loved by Cupid) -- an appropriate crater name for a space rock named Eros.
