A Cosmic Valentine

On Feb. 13, 2000, scientists at Johns Hopkins University announced the stunning discovery of a human heart outline embedded in the asteroid Eros, named for the god of love. The image was taken by the spacecraft NEAR Shoemaker as it prepared to go into orbit around Eros.

Unfortunately (as the scientist's may have secretly suspected) the 3-mile-wide (5-kilometer) depression turned out to be a trick of light, which struck some admittedly odd features.
