A Cosmic
Valentine
On Feb. 13, 2000,
scientists at Johns Hopkins University announced the stunning discovery of a human
heart outline embedded in the asteroid Eros, named for the god of love. The
image was taken by the spacecraft NEAR Shoemaker as it prepared to go into
orbit around Eros.

scientist's may have secretly suspected) the 3-mile-wide (5-kilometer)
depression turned out to be a trick of light, which struck some admittedly odd
features.
